U S Senator Frank Lausche said Gov C William ONeill was right to reduce high official salaries in Ohio. He dismissed as selfish those urging him to run for governor next year and noted ONeill acted after considering the pay raise and veto history.
Sir Anthony Eden was reported in good condition after a major intestinal operation at Lahey Clinic. Dr Richard B Cattell performed the procedure to remove an artificial tube from Eden’s bile duct inserted in 1953 to relieve an obstruction.
A drastic cutback in U S mail service took effect as of midnight after a lack of funds halted normal operations. Deliveries on Saturdays end and window hours shrink, with downtown business mail limited to two deliveries daily while third class mail and money orders are embargoed after April 29. Congress was expected to approve emergency funds soon.

INDIANAPOLIS Indiana Democratic National Chairman Paul Butler said he is considering a run against Republican U S Senator William E Jenner for the state's Senate seat next year. He indicated he likely will not announce until 1958 and would resign as national chairman if he decides to oppose Jenner. Butler noted he has never run for public office but would do so to oppose Jenner. The Ohio Division reported March precipitation was light with total amounts below normal and forecast more discussion with Claude Wickard about the national senatorial situation.
A fire at Lake Erie College for Women in Painesville, Ohio, destroyed the west wing housing 20 dormitory rooms in a 98 year old building. Two students Scotty Fleming and Diane Gargano alerted others after spotting smoke in a closet. detectives reported arson wiring as the blaze cause while all 220 residents escaped in nightclothes with only water damage to the main section.

A six year old Avon Lake boy died in St. Joseph Hospital Lorain at 5 27 p.m. after being hit by a westbound car on Walker Rd near Rt 76. Michael Hassel died from a ruptured liver with hemorrhage. The fatality is Avon Lake’s first of the year. He crossed to fetch the daily newspaper and was struck. Survivors include two sisters Claudia and Deborah and a brother Lyle, plus grandparents. Funeral services set for St. Joseph Church Monday.
In Cleveland an agreement to end a year long wage and condition dispute on the River Terminal Railway was expected to be signed on Saturday. Railroad workers returned to duty after a brief wildcat strike following a federal court injunction. Negotiators met with federal mediation to finalize terms. In Niigata Japan a massive avalanche buried a coal mining camp, with 36 feared dead and 17 rescued as of Friday night.
A gunman robbed the Household Finance Co in Akron of about $1,000 on Saturday. He held six employees at gunpoint during the robbery. Three applicants waiting in the rear said they did not know a robbery was taking place.
Mrs. Bernard Gower, aged 44, was granted a divorce on Saturday after telling the court her husband kept a meticulous financial record of every penny he spent including money spent on another woman.
