Steel union chief warns recovery harm to nation
Lynn R. Williams, International President of United Steelworkers of America, told Cleveland's City Club that the steel crisis threatens the country and must be tackled now. He opened a Steel Workers Placement Program aiding laid-off workers with job search help and counseling, with centers planned in Lorain Niles Warren and already in Youngstown. Williams argued unemployment remains high despite overall rate dips, warned of deindustrialization, criticized trade policies and enforcement of agreements, and urged broader cooperation among business labor government and finance leaders to preserve jobs and the industrial base.
