Lorain County weighs emergency 0.5% sales tax

Lorain County Commissioner Mary Jo Vasi signaled openness to an emergency 0.5 percent sales tax hike without voter approval to avert layoffs in the Lorain County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Martin Mahony warned that without the tax, 67 of 156 deputies could be cut to close a 750000 dollar deficit, as the commission debated the measure.

General foam surplus larger than expected in Elyria

Elyria city budget report shows general fund revenues up 155 000 to 18 009 017 while expenditures rise 52 379 to 17 715 584. Surplus revised to 293 433, up 102 621 from last month, with task force cutbacks and possible summer layoffs noted. Police fire funding remains a concern as sewer water rates may rise to bolster revenues.

Grace aide says survey shows lead over Keys

Grace campaign claims a 2,000 voter Democratic telephone poll gives him 28 percent support and 14 percent leaning toward Grace, vs Keys with 7 percent and 11 percent leaning toward Mike, leaving 800 undecided. Grace cites 840 in play and sees room to sway voters before the May 7 primary.

Abatement policy spreads with Ohio enterprise zones

Ohio adopts broad tax abatement through urban jobs and enterprise zones. Botkins, Anna, and Dinsmore Township join the program, joining 181 zones including 129 rural zones. New zones include Perrysburg Township, Columbus Grove with Pleasant Township, and Wapakoneta.

Akron hospital offers AIDS tests for patients of doctor

Akron based Children's Hospital Medical Center will provide free AIDS tests to 59 surgical patients treated in early 1987 by a Fairview General Hospital physician who died in 1988. Fairview officials said a records review found no cases warranting further testing or investigation.
