Federal review cites questionable care at New London Hospital
HEW consultant physicians found evidence of medically unnecessary tests and admissions at New London Hospital in southeast Huron County after a five month review begun in early 1978. Instances cited include inappropriate intravenous penicillin use, whole blood transfusions for mild anemia, unnecessary IV fluids, excessive steroids, improper cystoscopy, inadequate records, and non attending physicians writing histories. The findings came in a confidential letter from Judith D. Stec of HEW Medicare Bureau dated May 22, 1978.

Accord clears way for big tire plant in Akron
AKRON UP I reports General Tire and United Rubber Workers Local 9 agreed to new work rules for a $50 to $75 million Akron tire plant. Local 9 endorsed the changes, with about 1,775 hourly workers and 2,400 salaried staff. The plan calls for a 40 hour five day week, a 50 cent per hour pay cut, and replacement of the aging plant with a single story facility on about 100 acres.

Ill Elyria man George Day hospitalized at 92
George M Day, a 92 year old Elyria resident and former hardware shop owner, was admitted to Elyria Memorial Hospital in serious condition after a stroke at his home Monday. A World War I veteran and lifelong jogger, he graduated at 89 from Lorain County Community College in 1975 and was elected to the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame in 1974.
