Federal review cites questionable care at New London Hospital

HEW consultant physicians found evidence of medically unnecessary tests and admissions at New London Hospital in southeast Huron County after a five month review begun in early 1978. Instances cited include inappropriate intravenous penicillin use, whole blood transfusions for mild anemia, unnecessary IV fluids, excessive steroids, improper cystoscopy, inadequate records, and non attending physicians writing histories. The findings came in a confidential letter from Judith D. Stec of HEW Medicare Bureau dated May 22, 1978.

Pay for male coaches in Elyria far exceeds state averages

A study in Ohio Schools shows Elyria teachers with supplemental men’s coaching duties earn well above state norms and will rise further with a 7.1 percent retroactive board grant. Men’s head football and basketball coaches at Elyria West and Elyria High receive about 50 percent more than state averages.

Diocese near OK resumes negotiations as strike lingers

The Cleveland Diocesan Board of Catholic Education and lay teachers near agreement in a six day strike at 10 Catholic high schools. A federal mediator proposed terms similar to a pre Easter pause while Elyria Catholic teachers report near success. Classes end Thursday with vacation through April 23. 8,400 students affected.

Norris Tops Sports Writing for Third Year

The Chronicle-Telegram reporter Don Norris won first place for best sports news story in the 1978 AP state contest for under 100,000 circulation papers. His winning piece covered jockey Steve Cauthen finishing last in the Ohio Derby at Thistledown. Joe Klinec placed second in best sports feature. Details on page C-1.

Quiet strike linger for Ohio trucking amid kept calm

Area Teamsters spokesman praised restraint after a 10 day industry wide strike and lockout. Auto sector hit hardest but steel and food supplies show no layoffs or shortages with firms shifting to rail and alternate routes. Kroger reports stores remain stocked and shipments continue.

Accord clears way for big tire plant in Akron

AKRON UP I reports General Tire and United Rubber Workers Local 9 agreed to new work rules for a $50 to $75 million Akron tire plant. Local 9 endorsed the changes, with about 1,775 hourly workers and 2,400 salaried staff. The plan calls for a 40 hour five day week, a 50 cent per hour pay cut, and replacement of the aging plant with a single story facility on about 100 acres.

Ill Elyria man George Day hospitalized at 92

George M Day, a 92 year old Elyria resident and former hardware shop owner, was admitted to Elyria Memorial Hospital in serious condition after a stroke at his home Monday. A World War I veteran and lifelong jogger, he graduated at 89 from Lorain County Community College in 1975 and was elected to the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame in 1974.
