Wahine ferry disaster at Wellington harbor claims many lives

Typhoon Jean wrecks the Wahine ferry entering Wellington harbor. Forty-two bodies recovered and about 100 missing as 101 survivors are hospitalized. The 9100 ton vessel capsized on a reef, while a Dunkirk style flotilla aided in rescues amid severe damage to Wellington.

Riots spread nationwide after King's murder funeral

Riots and violence broke out in Kansas City Newark and Trenton New Jersey as well as Jacksonville Florida and Wilmington Delaware following Dr Martin Luther King's assassination. National Guard and Army troops were called up and thousands were arrested with dozens dead and hundreds injured.

Ohio Gov. Rhodes aid Del Corso signaled a reduced mobilization need for the 16 000 member National Guard with only the 166 Infantry Battalion on alert at the state fairgrounds. Allies launch largest Viet attack near Saigon

U S military spokesmen said about 100000 allied troops unleashed in the war's biggest operation to eliminate 18000 to 20000 Communist troops in 11 provinces around Saigon. The drive, named Complete Victory, involved 75000 combat troops plus 3000 reserve forces from US, South Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand and Thailand.

Firebomb damages Oberlin grade school

An unidentified assailant hurled a lit pop bottle at Eastwood Elementary in Oberlin causing minor damage to a north side classroom. Police reported no injuries and riotous threats by youths as officers and firefighters contained the blaze within minutes. Duncan ordered lights on and daytime security at all district schools.
