Rumors Fly Over Possible Duck Stamp Fee Hike

The debate centers on a potential federal duck stamp price increase tied to wetlands funding. Congress would need to act for any change, with erroneous reports circulating about a $70 rate. The 1961 Wetlands Loan Act, expiring Sept 30 1983, funds wetlands via stamp revenues. If it lapses, most revenues repay the loan, shrinking funds for land purchases and risking wetlands loss. Alternatives including private incentives are being explored while Interior Secretary James Watt leads the commission amid criticism.
