Heart Institute probes if artificial heart violated rules

The National Heart Institute seeks to determine if federally funded research guidelines were breached by using an artificial heart on Haskell Earp. The patient was kept alive 65 hours before a human heart from Massachusetts was transplanted, but died in Houston from pneumonia and kidney failure. The institute notes government funds have supported artificial circulation work since 1963 and questions whether DeBakey's laboratory followed federal guidelines if the device originated there.

Head Start will spend balance in Lorain County this year

A projected $28,000 surplus in the Elyria and Lorain Head Start funds will be spent before year end. Lorain County Office of Economic Opportunity directors voted a resolution to seek federal funds for four projects Community Councils Legal Aid Day Care and Housing Survey for City View in Sheffield. Kennedy from the Chicago Office criticized finances and coordination citing lack of advisory groups and poor participation.

Auto kills Lorain man checking earlier crash

A 77 year old Lorain man was struck and killed after stepping from the median to inspect a prior collision on the bypass near Chestnut Ridge Road. Mary Halama of North Olmsted drove the striking vehicle. the earlier crash involved Philp Neville of Second Street. The death marks the 15th traffic fatality in Lorain County this year. investigation ongoing.

Avon Lake water plant emergency test turns real

An emergency test at Avon Lake water plant escalated to a real supply outage for about 20 minutes yesterday. Utilities director Robert Underhill said a biweekly standby generator check failed to restore regular power as the valve would not open, leaving the city mostly without water between 5 and 5:30 p.m. Fire departments from Bay Village and Sheffield Lake assisted, while B F Goodrich reported no water issues from its own 600000 gallon tank.

Farmer killed as truck hit by train near Ashland

Wilson Thomas, 56, of Ashland County, died after his farm truck was struck by a westbound freight train at a Penn Central crossing on Rt. 256. The crash, near the county line, threw the truck into flames and exploded. engineer James Crowley, 52, from North Royalton, reported to the scene. Thomas was taken to Eastman Funeral Home in New London where he was pronounced dead.
