Labor Secretary Wirtz, under Johnson's orders, met with five unions representing about 200000 of 700000 rail workers as a 14 hour push to halt a nationwide railroad strike. Talks extended to 3 am EST with unions then management before a 1130 am EST session with railroad negotiators.
Lorain landmark Herman E. Hageman chairman of Lorain Telephone Co. and Ohio independent industry leader died at St Joseph Hospital at 7 30 am He served as president then chairman and helped grow subscribers from about 9 090 in 1949 to over 40 000 He also led ship to shore system development on the Great Lakes and guided the Lorain County Radio Corp which supplied most lake vessel equipment.
The Illinois Central Railroad halted operations as a four-union strike spreads across 14 states from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. Embargoes halted freight, depots emptied, and congestion rose as workers demand paid holidays overtime and modernized work rules.
Franklin Maurer, 49, told Milwaukee judge Wednesday the court was not nice to reference his 62 arrests since 1939. Judge John Coffey sentenced him to a year in jail for probation violation. Maurer replied, If I'm going to be held, I'll just be that much older and so much thirstier.
