Floods from the Washita river overflowed banks at Rocky Ford and other areas in Oklahoma. Six residents in Rocky Ford drowned, six are missing, and two more deaths occurred elsewhere, raising the state toll to 22 in the last 48 hours. Local homes were inundated as waters surged through the community.
Walnut Kansas April 9 United States Marines en route to China were saved from possible death when two Walnut men acted. Sam Plum 65 a farmer waded Little Walnut Creek to flag an oncoming train and E B Carlos railroad agent ran a half mile to signal danger. The engineer halted the locomotive within feet of a washout preventing a plunge into the stream.
Conneaut teen Floyd Hewitt, 16, charged with clubbing to death Mrs. Fred Brown and her five year old son, says he can prove an alibi. He claims he was home with a man when the slaying occurred as jurors are drawn for the murder case amid court tension. Also a peeping Tom incident on 13th and 14th streets led to police pursuit, but the suspect escaped and was described as colored.
James Lyon, known Norwalk killer, urged his brother Leonard to join a bold murder plot hours before his execution in Ohio. The plan unfolded as Leonard was summoned from the power plant, with a dictaphone capturing their last conversation. Warden Thomas reported Leonard refused to aid Lyon, sealing another grim chapter on death row.
Chicago April 9 police logged another gang killing as 25 year old store proprietor Alet Barba, an important prosecution witness in a murder trial, was shot at his store door. Authorities seek re arrest of Sam Glanama Diero Rocco and Joseph Pape on charges linked to the killing. William Hale Thompson announced plans to take city reins Tuesday noon to begin a third term and appoint a new police chief after Moran A Collins resigned following the election.
A common pleas court jury reportedly deliberated a minute to convict Elliot Freed of automobile theft in Cleveland. He received an indeterminate sentence at Mansfield Reformatory.
John King of a national agency in Cleveland told the Men’s club of the First Congregational church last night that advertising is essential to merchandising. He said ads must appeal to emotions and create a favorable mind state for the product, noting advertising is a powerful force when other merchandising areas function properly. Continued on Page 2.
In New York a 14 year old girl testified in magistrate court that her foster mother Mrs Everett S Pratt of Des Moines burned her with an electric curling iron and beat her with a shoe tree. The punishment occurred in a Plaza Hotel suite costing 16 dollars a day after the child wandered into the lobby while left alone.
Miss Wilmetta M. Moore of Washington and Miss Adrienne Spahn of Lakewood are named president and vice president respectively of Wooster College gyrls self-government board which handles all discipline matters for the school.
Seven men are believed dead after a cave-in at the Pacific Coast Coal Company mine in Carbonado Washington. Eight men were buried. one revived, two bodies recovered, and five others still trapped as rescue crews labored through the night to reach them.
The National Tube Company at Lorain was ordered by the state board of health to eliminate phenol waste polluting Elyria's lake and drinking water. The service director and water works chief represented Elyria at Columbus. The company was given a period to begin work, else the board would issue an official order.
In Fremont Ohio a funeral is held for Henri Clauss 67 a wealthy cutlery maker from Fremont and Tipton Ind found shot dead in an abandoned Toledo building. Services are at the family home this afternoon with Rev C C Bub of St Pauls Episcopal officiating and burial at Oakwood Cemetery. Mrs Clauss and daughter Miss Florence Clauss accompany the body home. She asserts her husband did not die by his own hand but was murdered.
Armed with machine guns and oxygen torches, a 15 man gang raided the Thinola Water Case Company plant in Elgin on April 9, burning open a vault and fleeing with up to 100000 in jewelry and valve parts. Police traced clues toward Chicago as hundreds of officers searched the area.
Raymond Lorinzo, 29, a Lorain waiter, is jailed on a charge of shooting with intent after a fight at the California restaurant on 1818 28th Street. Tumercinzo Gomez, 28, was seriously wounded by a triple-shot volley, with Stella Machanek, 17, present. Gomez was taken to a hospital. Lorinzo told Stella to call police before surrendering.
S JL Cothrel sues Lorain County commissioners in the court of common pleas for 4657.89 claiming a March 11 1926 contract to lay water mains in Avon Lake village. He cites itemized expenditures and seeks payment of the balance due.
Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were found guilty of murder in Dedham and sentenced by Judge Webster Thayer to death in the electric chair at Charlestown during the week of July 10. The men, former mill workers, faced a six year legal battle marked by dramatic appeals and stark courtroom tension as sympathizers stood outside the courthouse.
Henry Stinson former secretary of war from New York is named legal representative to President Goolidge to study the Nicaraguan dispute. He is to propose a peace formula between rival factions and devise a plan to safeguard United States special rights for an interoceanic canal.
John A. Seydler of the National League announced that the Rogers Tarashy stock controversy is resolved. Tarashy’s stock will be bought by Sam Breadon, owner of the St. Louis Cardinals, from Ilamsky amid concessions by Ilamsky the New York Giants and the Cardinals.
NEW LURINGTON April 3 One mine in the Perry county field keeps producing coal despite wage differences between miners and road operators. The Perry County Coal Co owned and operated exclusively by William Bringardner and family. The Bringardners, including his wife and three sons and a daughter, haul a rail car of coal every second day. Bringardner says they pay rates to all, including the mother who carries meals and the son who keeps the books. The arrangement often ends in brief disputes but they arbitrate and resume operations. Bringardner bought the mine for 2250. It has a regular tipple and about 3 acres of coal land.
April 9 report from Cincinnati notes George Remus at Setinta county Jail where he completes two one year terms. He aided in catching four youths who fled officers transporting intoxication suspects. a fifth man escaped. Remus has 16 days left to serve and was moved from Troy jail on his request. Columbus dispatch adds James Scott, serving 8 to 20 years for shooting with intent, captured near Springfield and to be returned to Ohio Penitentiary March 27 escapee list.
London reports heavy rifle and shrapnel fire directed at the British destroyer Veteran 15 miles below Chinkiang. The ship replied with her main battery and disabled one Chinese gun. No British casualties.
London April 9 Four infantry divisions of the Russian army and three cavalry brigades have been mobilized for Siberia. The whole staff of one army unit is sent to China. The dispatch links these moves to the tense situation from the Chinese police raid on the Russian embassy in Peking and protests at the Russian consulate in Shanghai.

Youngstown Ohio April 9 George Durst died in a blaze that engulfed a tile barn after his younger brother escaped. The two had been playing with matches and started a fire in the straw. Firemen arrived but could not reach George before the flames.
Mrs. Mildred Mitchell of San Francisco and Honolulu and Wilbur Burston of Columbus, C., were released by Chinese police after the US legation forced the action when warrants were not obtained. US counsel from Tientsin refused to release without proper formalities. The couple remained at a hotel custody until the regation and US officials intervened.
Panis April 4. France England the United States Japan and Italy announced a formal agreement on reparations for the murder of foreigners at Nanking and looting of foreign property. It remains undecided whether the demands will be sent to Peking Hankow or Shanghai.
April 3 report from Ohio cites Marysville reformatory escape by May Putman, 28, of Lebanon. Officials suspect aid from Earl Putman. Van Wert records note a Mansfield reformatory release in 1929 for forgery by Hoe, believed brother to Putman. May Putman served one to twenty years for forgery.
April 9 Defiance Willam Kehnast a former state legislator and civil war veteran died at his home after a lengthy illness. He served in the state house earlier in his career and was known for his public service.
JF Burke told Lorain county Women’s Christian Temperance Union delegates that prohibition is a city problem as law enforcement struggles in large cities. He urged changing individual behavior rather than tightening laws, noting urban population growth and the need to convert people to support enforcement.
