Alltel reports 1983 earnings rise amid merger costs
Hudson area brief notes Alltel Corp and Mid Continent Allied Telephone merged to form Alltel with net earnings near 55.2 million in 1983, up 9 percent from combined 46.2 million in 1982. Elyria Telephone was a Mid Continent subsidiary before the merger and costs from merger and cellular startup slightly affected results. National Gypsum Co based in Lorain posts 53.8 million in 1983, boosted by a 4.4 million extraordinary gain from debt for equity exchange, with shipments up 7 percent and plants at 90 percent capacity. A Cleveland area business survey by the Purchasing Management Association shows continued regional growth, with gains in production employment and pricing, inventories mixed and new orders steady.
