Ohio jobless rate hits 10.2 percent in March
Ohio’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rose to 10.2 percent in March, the first increase since September 1983, while nationally the rate held at 7.8 percent. Roberta Steinbacher of the Bureau of Employment Services cautioned the rise may signal a stalled recovery and offered no firm forecast for the next two months. The state’s borrowing from the federal government for jobless benefits rose to 2.2 billion dollars, with at least 300 million expected to be repaid this year. If chronic unemployment were counted, the rate could rise about one percent.
