VE Day plans clash with postwar certainty in local talk

Number Continued From Page One 1 organization representatives expressed similar views. Factory reps hope workers will continue work for war products vital to the Pacific war, delaying celebration plans after the news of victory in Europe. Some plant plans already call for a day closed after VE Day. others favor continued work through the day. Kemp of the American Federation of Labor urged maintaining production and told unions to press members to stay on the job. Alva C. Smith doubted heavy celebration and predicted VE Day will differ from 1918 Armistice Day as the war may taper off rather than end abruptly. A Ike Eisenhower note about a non clean surrender echoed, prompting talk of adjusted celebrations and downtown hours. The community weighs whether stores stay open and how the public will honor the moment. A general plan for VE Day observance aims to coordinate activities while recognizing ongoing wartime needs.
