Armed robbery chase through Elyria park ends in woods behind retailers

Two suspects in their 20s robbed Erie Gold and Diamond Exchange on West River Road North. A car pursuit sent shoppers fleeing as the men escaped into woods behind OfficeMax and Michael's Crafts near Ford Road. Police, including detectives Costantino and Ellis, pursued with dogs and a police helicopter. A large manhunt disrupted a Friday lunch crowd as officers warned the public to stay clear.

Vermilion schools prep to fight Ford tax cut request

Vermilion school leaders plan to oppose Ford Motor Co. efforts to lower the Lorain Assembly Plant market value from 70 million to 56 million for 1996. A reduced assessment could cut about 196000 in annual tax revenue, worsening a district already cutting 1.1 million. Mayor Koziura criticized the move, while Ford's rep said the issue is market value, not last month's plant scale-back decision. If levies fail, students face bus and sports fee impacts.
