Pentagon weighs privatizing depot work to trim costs
The Pentagon proposes shifting maintenance from government depots to private contractors to save up to 15 billion dollars annually. The plan faces backlash from lawmakers in states that would lose jobs, including Utah and Oklahoma, with critics arguing the savings may not materialize. Deputy Defense Secretary John White cites core competency focus and efficiency as benefits while lawmakers demand depots retain some bid options. The plan affects about 89,000 civilian and 11,000 military depot workers across 30 sites.
