Pollution study yields uncertain outcome for Great Lakes dump plan
Army engineers told the House Public Works Committee that a two year 13 million study cannot determine the ultimate harm of dumping polluted sediments into the Great Lakes. They proposed a 10 year program of landfills or dikes at 35 harbors with estimated costs from 70 million to 2 billion dollars for source elimination. Rep. Pucinski urged banning authorized dumping areas, arguing the lakes face ongoing harm and national risk.
