The Elyria City Board of Education discussed a request to relax the policy barring married women from teaching. Superintendent Maston said there is no written rule, only a long standing practice that contracts lapse after marriage. The board, noting public concerns and income distribution effects, decided no change would be made at this time.
New York April 4 Vice President Philip Murray of the United Mine Workers Union said the coal producers rejected every one of the union 26 suggestions for contract improvement. Conference Chairman Walter L Robison announced the subcommittee failed to agree on a new contract replacing the expired one. About 338000 miners quit work yesterday due to the contract expiration.
Grass fires sparked by residents burning small areas were tackled by Fire Department crews. At 10 15 a m a blaze on Bond Street was stopped by Engine Company No 3, and at 10 30 a m another on Washington Avenue near Columbus Street was quelled by a service truck unit. Earlier this afternoon a blaze on Gulf Road near Overbrook Drive was being extinguished by a department detail.
Fair with frost in western areas tonight and warmer in the east. Wednesday should be mostly cloudy with a few showers possible at night. A high pressure system over the Great Lakes extends south toward Florida, while a trough from Manitoba to New Mexico centralizes the region. Showers noted from Arkansas and Missouri west to the Rockies and across Canada from Manitoba to British Columbia. Eastern temperatures remain low with occasional invasions in the Plains States.
The Broad street one hour parking ordinance, cutting two hour limits to one, received its second reading. Final passage was delayed to April 17 as three councilmen opposed passage by suspension of the rules.
Elyria City Council passed a 3 500 ordinance on third reading to fund a two way radio system for the police. The measure, not an emergency, requires 30 days before purchase and borrows from police relief and firemen pension funds at up to 3 percent.
The Elyria City Board of Education authorized clerk treasurer W. O. McClellan to request a $55,000 advance on tax money from the county auditor. This, with $40,000 in state funds due June 1, should cover expenses through June 9, and funds from June tax collections should be available when school opens in fall.
New York April 4 Tammany District Leader James J. Hines won a certificate of reasonable doubt in Supreme Court permitting him to appeal his four to eight year sentence for aiding the Dutch Schultz numbers racket. Justice Peter J. Schmuck set bail at $35,000. Hines, a 63 year old former blacksmith, expected to post after court order details are worked out by DA Thomas E. Dewey and new attorney Martin Littleton.
The 50th warship of the national defense program, a 14,700 ton aircraft carrier, slid down the Bethlehem Steel shipyard ways in Quincy as Mrs. Charles Edison broke champagne on the prow. The launch drew thousands as tugs and cheers accompanied the vessel into Fore River.
The Rev Francis A Quinn persuaded a gunman to release two hostages in New York City. Elyrian Leslie Nicholas, of 214 Princeton Avenue, is the brother of the gunman Merton A Nicholas, a New York Central Railroad official. Merton and his wife were held by the gunman. The New York Nicholas is assistant treasurer of the Missionary Education Movement.
Wellington Ohio officials announced that all 29 teachers in the Wellington school system were reemployed at current salaries for the next school year. The board set dates for events including baccalaureate May 28, senior play May 12, spring concert April 28, junior senior prom May 5, and Kiwanis luncheon May 18. The commencement speaker will be Carl V Wevgant, chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court.
A heated council session failed to pass a new midnight closing ordinance for all liquor establishments. Councilman Leonard Fowls led criticism, claiming the delay advantaged clubs renewing licenses, as amendments to the old ordinance were debated and the measure adjourned without action. The proposal would have banned midnight liquor sales including Saturday nights and prohibited 3.2 beer sales on Sundays.

Dr A Caswell Els director of Cleveland College will speak at the Lorain County Adult Education Council meeting to be held Wednesday evening April 6 at the First Congregational Church Lorain. Dinner at 6 30 p m and a musical program are planned. Officers for the coming year will be elected.

Air corps officers worked at top speed with leaves cancelled to speed the buildup of 6,000 first line fighting planes. President Roosevelt signaled take off as he signed the national defense bill authorizing the expansion from 1,500 to 6,000 planes. Congress soon to pass appropriations for new aircraft, with funds for an estimated 784 of them.
Carlisle township council discussed an ordinance targeting about 200 absentee owned hogs feeding on city garbage near Fuller road. Dr. F R Dew and Sheriff Carl R Finegan urged permits for garbage collectors to curb nuisance. council moved the measure to the Safety Committee with emergency passage blocked.
The Elyria City Board of Education reaffirmed filling fireman and custodian posts by seniority and named Harry L Chrysler to the central heating plant at Elyria High School. Chrysler, long in school service since 1926, holds an engineers license but the board notes the position is classed as fireman.
Elyria City Board of Education approved daily Bible readings across all schools after a Gideon Society request. A 10 minute morning opening will require teachers to read from the Bible or an approved Bible story, with Bible readings and stories provided by the district.
The city mail delivery extension for Warren, Lexington, Concord and South Logan streets was refused by postal authorities in Washington. Congressman Don W. Harter and W. W. Howes reported that rules require 50 percent building, while the area is about 92 percent built but lacks sufficient residents for city delivery.

New York April 4 Jack Benny the radio and screen comedian pleaded guilty in federal court to smuggling jewels and received a suspended sentence of one year and one day in prison plus a 10000 fine. Benny admitted concealing two diamond studded clips and a bracelet to dodge duty of about 800.

Gerald E. Stang, 26, of 340 High Street, was named Elyria sanitary police officer by the Board of Health. He will start work immediately at a salary of 135 dollars monthly, under supervision of Jack Baird who has served since Frank H. Williams retired. Baird remains in temporary role. Stang will investigate sanitary violations and inspect restaurants hotels factories schools and other public buildings.
Bagdad April 4 martial law was proclaimed in Mosul after a mob killed the British Consul G E A Monck Mason and set fire to the consulate. Order was restored four hours after the burning. Monck Mason, 52, in consular service since 1908, served Mosul, heart of British oil field exploitation in the Near East.
