E G Mathews Ends Life Today
Edmund G Mathews former chief inspector of the Ohio liquor control department killed himself at his Columbus home this afternoon. He shot himself in the heart with a .45 pistol and was found by his eldest son Silas William. Two other sons and two servants were in the house. No reason was given beyond his dismissal. Mathews headed 835 enforcement agents and was appointed by Governor White in 1934. He planned to appeal but civil service rules blocked it. He was born in Lorain in 1895 and served in World War I.
