No evidence of Heaven's Gate copycats, officials say
San Diego AP reports authorities see no proof of new Heaven's Gate copycat deaths beyond the 39 members of the high tech UFO cult found dead in Rancho Santa Fe. Investigators note historical mass deaths linked to phenobarbital and alcohol, with no immediate criminal charges anticipated.

Gate cultists script fed sci fi project by producer
Los Angeles producer Rick Singer befriended three Heaven's Gate members who wrote a rambling sci fi script about alien battles and evolutionary breakthroughs. He coached them into a workable story, while the cult’s mass death occurred days later at a Rancho Santa Fe mansion. Singer later pitched NBC on a related TV concept.
