Antihistamines Fail To Cut Absenteeism In Cold Study
A three-year study at General Motors plants in Indiana tested antihistamines for colds among 4,627 workers, with 43,000 doses for 8,079 colds. While 66 percent reported relief within 48 hours, there was no reduction in lost time. Side effects appeared in 23 percent, mainly drowsiness or light headedness, and overall no clear long-term benefit was found. The study covered cold seasons 1947-50 and involved seven antihistamines.
