A community fund drive in Canton reports 258656 raised, 8129 percent of a 315567 goal, with 56911 remaining to reach Thursday night. Division C exceeded its 5400 quota by 11 dollars, Ladies day featured violinist Rubinoff, and Elmer J. Helbig urged continued effort to sustain card-driven progress toward the final target.
Canton residents bought over 2 million dollars in defense savings bonds and about 50 thousand in defense savings stamps since May 1. For six months ending Oct 31 area outlets sold 2,208,649 in bonds with a peak week Sept 15 20 at 188,986. Stamp sales totaled 49,196 with 20,112 during the Canton demo. October sales fell from September. Ohio ranked fifth in Series E bond sales and seventh in defense stamps in early months. Lehman High School will enter the Ohio football week for defense savings contest. Under principal I W Delp plans, Lehman will be Canton's only representative in the three section competition. The band will perform a half time defense show at the Akron Garfield game at Fawcett stadium Friday night.
Selective service registrants who want to enlist in the army navy or marine corps face a new rule barring recruitment after the notice to report for the unit type examination. The order, issued to all recruiters, stops deferrals for enlistment once the exam notice is sent, first enforced in Canton Board No 3.

British sailors boarded five Vichy French merchantmen off the south African coast and prevented three from scuttling. In Detroit on November 4, women peace demonstrators hurled eggs and tomatoes at Lord Halifax as he arrived at the Chancery building for a meeting with Archbishop Edward Mooney. Police broke up the protest after several eggs splattered his way during his two day Detroit defense industries tour. The demonstrators, calling themselves The Mothers of America, began the action to express opposition to the ambassador’s visit.
