Break With World Reds CIO Gives Left Wingers Ultimatum

The CIO executive board, after a fiery three day meeting, ordered left wingers to sever ties with the World Federation of Trade Unions within five months or risk expulsion. The board withdrew CIO from WFTU by a 38 to 9 vote, and prepared a Cleveland convention agenda including potential expulsion of the Farm Equipment Workers Union for refusing to merge with the UAW. President Murray denounced Harry Bridges for misrepresentation and signaled a hot convention ahead. The CIO also endorsed the Truman Fair Deal and urged Congress to pass pro-labor measures.

William Casper Peter, 79, of Beech Creek near Lock Haven, Pa, was chosen as the American father of 1949 by the National Father's Day Committee. He has 18 children and 80 grandchildren and will receive the honor at Lock Haven city hall as newsreel cameras record the ceremony for the National Father’s Day banquet in New York on June 19. Peter says he rises at 5 a.m. to split logs for a local paper mill and blows off steam by hammering the wedge.
