Empire War Fleet Steams To Defense Of India. FRETESS EAST OHIO ASKS 11% INCREASE FOR GAS RATES. A proposal to raise local gas rates about 11 percent was presented to the city council. The plan asks a $1 base charge for the first 400 cubic feet and 58 cents per thousand for usage beyond that, with a 3 cent discount for 10-day pay. Current rates are 83 cents for 300 cubic feet and 53 cents per thousand thereafter with a 3 cent discount. Estimates show typical monthly bills rising modestly under the new plan. The four-year franchise includes a cancelation clause. Further meetings are planned before official action.

Philippine raids surprise enemy on Bataan and Mindanao

International News Service reports Lieut. Gen. Wainwright's American and Filipino troops attacked Japanese forces on Bataan and Mindanao while Corregidor endured continuous air bombardment. Anti-aircraft batteries and searchlights kept enemy planes at bay. On Mindanao, Wainwright patrols reached within a mile of Zamboanga and raided a Japanese outpost with no casualties.

Allies Fire Enemy Ship in Air Attack on Timor

Australian Prime Minister John Curtin said Allied air forces attacked Koepang in Timor, destroying a 7,000 ton Japanese vessel and lighting the harbor. Powder blast kills two at Granitesville plant

A blast at the Unexcelled Manufacturing Co. plant in Granitesville SI rocked a one story brick building used for war production. At least two men were killed and several others were seriously injured as workers were evacuated from the scene.

British Paratroopers Strike German Sub Base at St Nazaire

United Press reports that March 28 British forces including Canadian paratroops attacked port installations at the German held submarine base of St Nazaire. Some accounts say the raid achieved partial success while fighting continued at the mouth of the Loire river as stranded British forces, outnumbered and without reinforcements, faced likely doom.

Local Ration Boards Move to New Ohio Power Office

Canton and Stark county rationing boards will move from Civilian Defense HQ to the Ohio Power Co building at 301 Cleveland Ave SW around April 6. Space is donated by A M Plummer, with offices on the main floor lobby and entrance on Cleveland Ave. The move aims to reduce congestion and improve public service efficiency.
