Levee Break Near Port Allen Forces Louisiana Evacuations
The Mississippi River breached a levee three miles north of Port Allen, across from Baton Rouge. Water advanced three miles within three hours, prompting Red Cross relief at Port Allen as residents fled. The break occurred near Wilkinson sugar Plantation where the river directly struck the levee. Flood stage had not been expected. Baton Rouge’s river height was 34 feet yesterday, below flood level.
