Emma Miller Wins U S Girls Marbles Title in Canton Heat
Emma Miller of Hartville, an Amish girl from Lake Local School, captured the U S girls marbles championship at Sbury Park New Jersey. She started with a seven game lead over Janet Siers of Philadelphia and swept six straight games to clinch the title. Emma earned a bicycle a gold crown and an all expenses paid trip to next year finals. Her victory marks a rare double for The Repository as both a spelling bee and marbles title come from Stark County schools this year.

A Memphis airline captain and a young stewardess were hailed for saving all 44 aboard after a Convair crash near EMPHIS Tennessee. Capt. Ed Hatch and Miss Yvonne Hanavan guided the fast falling two engine prop liner to a clear field, then organized rapid passenger evacuation as flames erupted. Seventeen treated and released, 20 seriously hurt, but all expected to recover. The Memphis pilot maneuvered under a high tension wire to avoid electrocution. Hanavan led the post crash rescue. The flight from Fort Worth to New York departed at 1 10 p m and crash came a minute and a half later.
