Four long term prisoners escaped from the 83 year old state penitentiary near Moundsville and four were recaptured within a day. Dennis P. Taylor, 27, wearing prison garb, was seized in a Glen Easton store by Floyd Fritzman after aiming a rifle at him. Taylor was returning to the prison for questioning about others on the run. Police and guards mounted a wide search with crews and bloodhounds, noting a guard was bound during the escape and that guard shortages aided the break.
