City council approved readvertising the old auditorium for sale with three members voting no. The 59 year old jurist, appointed to the high court in 1940 by Franklin D Roosevelt, had served Michigan governor in the 1930s and was last governor general of the Philippines. He never married and was long viewed as one of Washington's most eligible bachelors.
Newcomerstown July 19 A 65 year old janitor Andrew Covic was jailed in New Philadelphia awaiting first degree murder charges after he shot and killed his estranged wife Mary 60 and wounded his daughter Katherine Corbetts 25 Monday night A neighbor Paul Harbold 42 was slightly injured after disarming Covic and subduing him in the home on West Canal Street seven shots were fired from a .22 pistol during the confrontation Harbold reported Covic said I am going to give you your divorce and the gun in his hand Covic who had entered the home attacked with a butcher knife and putty knife wounding Corbetts wrist Coroner J F Lake said the fatal bullet grazed Mrs Covics left arm and went to her heart.

The Climalene Co. of 1022 9th St SW announced it has purchased the assets trade name inventories and goodwill of The Skidoo Co. of Columbus which has made Skidoo household cleaner for over 25 years. Timken Roller Bearing Co and the CIO United Steel Workers plan to sign a new one year bargaining agreement this afternoon at 2. The contract raises hourly pay by 1 to 22 cents for about a quarter of Timken's 12 000 workers and includes a 90 day wage bargaining reopening. Terms were accepted by unionists in Canton Columbus Wooster Zanesville and Mt Vernon, averting a threatened strike. The pact covers Canton Gambrinus Wooster Zanesville Columbus and Mount Vernon plants.
