Timken C I O Continue New Contract Talks

Timken Roller Bearing Co and the C I O United Steel Workers resumed talks as a strike threat loomed over the steel industry. The session focused on Timken’s selective wage adjustment covering 2867 employees at Canton Gambrinus Columbus Zanesville Mount Vernon and Wooster plants while the union pressed other contract sections. W E Mycoff said the bulk of discussion would address remaining contract terms. Robert E Burns, a federal conciliator, participated as the session ended quickly after the company presented wage-rate proposals and affected individuals' names.

California Air Death Toll 35 Probe Begins in Indian Crash

The July 13 report says 35 died and 14 injured when a Standard Airlines C-46 crashed in fog after a wingtip brush in the Santa Susana Mountains. CAB officials differed on whether a passenger fight caused the accident, while the pilot claimed the brawl led to the crash. airline president Weiss suggested it may have contributed. The plane, arriving from New York, had requested police to stand by to arrest a fighting passenger.

Stark County Board Adopts Loyalty Oath for Election Staff

The Stark County board of elections unanimously adopted a resolution requiring about 2000 members including employees and precinct officials to take a non Communist loyalty oath before the November elections. The oath will be administered as officials are sworn in in September and October, with the form to be reviewed by County Prosecutor D Deane McLaughlin.
