School Board Approves 62000 Pay Increases for Staff

Canton school leaders approved 62000 in raises for teachers and janitorial staff at a Friday meeting. About 45000 of the total will be paid next week with 17000 more to teachers next fall when max salaries rise by 50. A salary restoration of 142.50 for 270 employees was also recommended, effective Feb 1, with 9 000 allocated to support janitors and miscellaneous workers.

Rearick Named Head Coach At McKinley High

Herman B. Rearick becomes head football coach and athletic director at McKinley High, continuing as basketball coach. He replaces Floyd Walder who leaves for Army Reserve duty. Rearick signs a one year, 3400 dollar contract and will oversee the whole athletic program as the district shifts from separate coaches to a unified system.

MacArthur's Troops Seize Prisoners In Philippines Offensive

Canton's December gains set state employment, payroll records

Canton led Ohio in December with a 25 percent rise in employment over 1940, the largest among eight major cities. Statewide payrolls rose 53 percent and independent retail sales surged 34 percent in 1941, with Canton, Cincinnati, Dayton and Youngstown posting gains from November to December.

Senate group votes 27 billion navy bill

The Senate appropriations committee unanimously approved a record navy fund of 26,495,265,474 dollars, limiting presidential power to transfer ships. Sen. Overton said leasing would be restricted to convoy and landing ships, with the measure as emergency construction. The appropriation, the largest in history, would fund about 25,000 Navy airplanes.

Norfolk veterans recount a German U-boat sinking the 6,836-ton tanker Roch ester off the Virginia coast in broad daylight. Cool Rear Guard Troops Protect Malay Evacuees

SINGAPORE JAN 31 I came back from the Malaya mainland with the forces protected by British Imperial fighting a rear guard action to withdraw for Singapore defense and a long stream of refugees crossing the Joho Bahru causeway. Australians British Indians and others kept machines running as bombs fell while a notable heroine Mrs Stanley Baillie of North Berwick Scotland refused to leave a hospital base to move wounded soldiers. Her husband is in the army and she stayed in a dangerous area as others departed.
