Java Sea Battle Rocks Pacific War Front

Sugar Ration Cut To Eight Ounces Weekly

Washington reports sugar rations drop to eight ounces per person per week due to packaging waste and wartime shortages. Two Pearl Harbor Leaders To Face Court Martial

Rear Admiral Husband E. Kimmel and Major General Walter C. Short, the Pearl Harbor commanders, were ordered to stand trial for dereliction of duty per the Roberts commission findings. Their retirements were accepted immediately, with trials postponed for public safety.

The secretary of the Navy announced retirement effective March 1 1942 without condonation and said preparation for court martial would proceed for dereliction of duty. Commandos Raid on German Post in Northern France

Massillon Couple Named Fairmount's Supervisors

Massillon couple Mr and Mrs Jesse Sohner will take charge of Fairmount Children's home near Alliance as superintendent and matron replacing Mr and Mrs R D George after 13 years. The change follows a 90 day engagement by the Sohners and will be temporary pending civil service procedures. George and his wife plan a leave of absence this year with possible return in 1943. The board will investigate political interference claims at a Wednesday meeting and determine permanent staffing from state civil service eligibility lists.

Ohio woman dies at age 100 in Findlay

Mrs. H. B. Thomas dies at 100 in Findlay Ohio on February 28. Born near Bowling Green she was one of 12 children. She is survived by a sister, three daughters, a son and many grandchildren.

Pearl Harbor game ends in boy's fatal shooting

Eight year old Carl Richard Humphreys was fatally shot Friday at 9 35 p m while playing Pearl Harbor with siblings on North Canton Mimo Road near Route 62. Older brother Eugene Jr 13 says he loaded a 30 06 rifle, gun fired when arm bumped, projectile entered left side and exited shoulder.

U S Attack on Wake Admitted by Japan

Japan admitted today that the United States Navy attacked Wake Island where a small band of Marines held out for weeks amid heavy aerial and sea assaults. The Japanese communique said the action occurred last Tuesday with considerable force and acknowledged a patrol boat sunk and limited damage to military facilities along with a few casualties.

House Takes Up War Power Bill

Washington Feb 28 The house resumes consideration of the second war powers bill after rejecting a proposal to suspend the 40 hour week and overtime pay. A 226 to 62 vote killed Rep Smiths Virginia amendment opposed by the administration as Roosevelt would veto the war measures. The move surprised leaders as many Republicans joined Democrats in opposition and party leaders questioned the measure’s effect on labor contracts.

Roads Clear in Stark After 24 Hour Snow

Snow drifted into the extreme northern part of Stark county over 24 hours but caused no traffic trouble. A canal Fulton station crew was deployed at 10 p m to handle the situation. State and county patrols spread sand and chemicals on slippery spots as total snow fell a little over one inch on the level.
