The Israeli cabinet approved a draft compromise armistice with Egypt, with Cairo’s final approval still uncertain. Beersheba remains a disputed issue as Rhodes talks proceed, and N Eger talks with Lebanon and Syria are contemplated alongside further armistice discussions.
North Cape, Norway sits near Russia's Arctic frontier with weak defenses and a tiny Norwegian garrison at Kirkenes. Analysts warn a small Kremlin strike could seize the cape, leaving Norway isolated without guaranteed Western aid amid a tense postwar balance.
Mrs Catherine Roberts aged 68 died from burns suffered January 11 when her dress caught fire in a hotel room. Coroner Dr Herbert P Lyle said a spark from a cigarette apparently ignited the dress.
The Coal Producers Committee for Smoke Abatement will start a week long survey in Canton Tuesday. About 200 buildings on the smoke list will be inspected for heating equipment including downtown offices hotels stores schools churches and multi family residences.

Canton moves its rent overcharge case to the Ohio Supreme Court after a Fifth District ruling requiring the city to pay 52 000 from general funds to the water department for 1941 to 1946. Willis E. Himebaugh, a taxpayer and water rent payer, seeks about 270 000 overcharges from 1931 to 1946.

Donaldson takes effect March 1 with a civil service exam for a permanent appointment later. Snee has long been active in Democratic politics and chairs Stark County elections board. He is married with four sons and a daughter.
Philadelphia ends its 10 day transit strike as the Philadelphia Transportation Co. resumes service. CIO unionists approve a pay raise ending the walkout, but the city recalls the strike of 49 that cost about 70 million dollars in lost business and industry.
James L. Johnson 48 of 910 9th St NE pleaded innocent to second degree murder and was bound over to the grand jury after the fatal shooting of Anthony H. Manos 29 at Mabels Chicken Shack in Canton. Manos, manager of Three Hi Snack Shop, died from a gunshot during a card game dispute. Johnson’s witnesses described Manos striking him with a German 38 pistol before the shot. Manos had a prior record and was on parole. services pending at Welch funeral home.
Washington reports a massive Atlantic Fleet exercise with 35 000 sailors and 120 ships including the carrier Franklin D Roosevelt and battleship Missouri. The program features simulated atomic blasts and advanced submarines to test sea warfare ahead of mid March drills. Admirals Blandy and Radford observe as British and Canadian observers join.
Governor Lausche ordered Ohio Attorney General Herbert Duffy to assume investigation and prosecution of the Eleanor E Gifford slaying in Athens. He acted at the Athens County grand jury’s request and said Bryant will direct the case as the AG’s chief counsel.
