Watson Wins Probation in Security Case

Virgil H. Watson of Summerfield was granted two years probation by Judge George N. Graham after a guilty verdict on two counts of violating the Ohio Securities Act. The state implied the case was precedent setting and did not seek jail. Watson sold an unregistered 1/16th interest in an oil well to Emil Sinay of Canton in 1946 while not licensed to deal in securities. Watson was represented by Ian Bruce Mart, William L. Hart Jr., and L. Darrell Ake.

Canton Chamber of Commerce reports higher business activity in January despite layoffs. Bank clearings and debits rose 2 to 22 percent from last January, industrial employment averaged 33,800, up 830 year over year though 225 below December. New construction and post office receipts improved over last year but fell from December.

Saville told Congress the air warning system is dangerously inadequate and urged swift approval of a 161 million dollar plan to place radar outposts around the United States and at sea. Tokyo Ring Called Most Successful Spy Ring

A U S Army report says the Tokyo based Communist spy ring led by Richard Sorge ran for nine years before Pearl Harbor and fed the Soviet Union Japanese and German war plans. The group, described as possibly the most successful ever, was toppled in 1941 with leaders hanged in 1944. Agnes Smedley and Guenter Stein were named as alleged spies, while the ring used concealed radio, couriers, and embassies to transmit data on politics and war.
