20 to 44 Draft Groups to Sign at 120 Places

Stark county draft boards completed arrangements for 120 locations where unregistered men aged 20 to 44 may sign next weekend and over Presidents Day. Most boards will use regular voting sites with exceptions in Canton and Alliance. rural boards cover districts 6, 8, and 10.

In Vichy France February 7 two hundred people were arrested at Rouen in the occupied zone for an attempted bombing of a German army building. A separate report from Tours spoke of an 8 p.m. curfew imposed as punishment for the community. The Petit Parisien described a disturbance at Amiens where an armed cyclist and companion damaged a store front used as a recruiting station for volunteers to the anti Russian legion.

American and Filipino troops crushed 300 Japanese attackers in western Batan after landings behind the left flank. Tanks led the drive, mopping up foxholes and trenches in harsh jungle fighting near the China Sea as prisoners revealed dire Japanese shortages and dwindling morale.

Singapore feb 7 Britain’s vast Singapore naval base once costing 400 million dollars and 15 years lies empty and deserted. The reporter toured the north coast complex near Johore straits, finding deserted workshops and 30 sailors cleaning up remnants of equipment.

15,000 Ton Ship Sunk Near New York Harbor

The 15,855 ton Swedish freighter Amerika land, under charter from Swedish owners, was sunk by two submarines about 170 miles off Sandy Hook on Feb 2 after being torpedoed thrice. Eleven of 39 crew survived, rescued after three days by an Allied vessel. Capt. Ragnar Schutz and engineers survived. others unknown. The attack came as Axis submarine activity continued.

Road Crews Battle Snow Drifts Across Rural Highways

State and county highway crews worked through Saturday night to prevent drifts on rural routes. Four state crews patrolled major roads while others reached isolated stretches by about 10 p.m. Officials anticipated slick conditions as snow began Saturday morning. In the city, four street trucks spread cinders and salt at dangerous spots as the thermometer held around 30 degrees.

Fire destroys two story home near Fairhope

A two story residence on the H. H. Miller estate north of Louisville road near Fairhope was wiped out by a fire of unknown origin late Saturday afternoon. Firemen found the blaze fully involved on arrival at 4 36 p m with no water source and access blocked by road conditions. The upstairs bedroom is blamed for the start. Samuel Campian and family occupied the house and survived with some belongings saved.

Tangier Riots Follow Time Bomb Blast Kills 25

Rioting against British interests erupts in Tangier as Arabs and Spaniards target British posts and the Minzah hotel after a time bomb explosion on a quay killed 25, with about 60 injured. German propagandists link events to moves in North Africa and Spanish Morocco.

Bombing raids on Rangoon mark fourth night of attack

Rangoon Burma faced the fourth successive night raid by Japanese bombers aimed at the airdrome north of the city and the Burma road. RAF Hurricanes and Allied pilots, including Indian, American, British, Australian and Canadian forces, defended the area as ground troops remained vulnerable and were believed to be consolidating positions to strike the Burma road. One American casualty, Lieut. Bert Christman, 26, of Fort Collins, Colo., was added to the list.

London dispatch reports British bombers swept a wide North Sea sector on offensive patrols. The air ministry communique said one enemy ship was shot down and three British aircraft were missing after numerous engagements with German fighters.
