Truce Group Awaits Formal Peiping Reply

The United Nations cease-fire commission clung to thin hope that Communist China would agree to negotiate Korea truce terms. Three urgent cables to Chou En-lai followed Peiping radio’s rejection, as the panel prepared to meet December 26 to draft a report due January 2, 1951. The benign optimism faded amid Red China’s demands for all foreign troops removed, the U.S. quit guarding Korea, and China’s UN readmission.

Dieting Theory That Bread Is Fattening Dented

Ruth Leverton of the University of Nebraska challenged the view that bread makes dieting hard. In a test with 12 coeds on a low calorie plan including bread and butter at every meal, each shed about 2.8 pounds weekly over eight weeks while costing roughly 68 cents per day per person. She argued no single food fattening, total calories matter, and a safe diet should provide a fair share of nutrients along with calories. The menus featured bread with meals, skim milk, fruits, vegetables, and a portion of protein.
