West Denies He Sold Influence for War Orders
Former Ohio representative and ex interior secretary Charles West testified before a senate defense committee that he did not sell influence. He said he worked as a business consultant for Empire Ordnance Co. in 1940, accepted 1 percent of gross business, and sought no specific contracts or payments beyond that stake. West, who pursued unpaid fees, claimed his efforts helped shift the War Department toward British contract clearance. He also noted Cohen proposed a future $50,000 Democratic contribution.
