United States formally takes over the Normandie
The United States government has formally taken over the French luxury liner Normandie. The State Department said the Maritime Commission could assume control under existing law with compensation to the owners, likening the action to seizures of vessels like the Kungsholm. It disclosed that prior to entering the war, negotiations with France had been under way for purchase and that Paris was willing to sell.
