Barbara Leitz Runnerup In 43-Round Spelling Bee

Barbara Leitz, 13, eighth grader from Avondale School, finished as runnerup in the 43 round spelling bee at Timken High School. Kim won with “homicidal” after Barbara misspelled “incipient” as with an s. The event drew 31 finalists, the longest bee yet, with prizes, guest Miss Jean Chappelear, and judges from local colleges. Kim will represent the Can' et Rew area at the national spelling bee in Washington May 23-27.

Work Halted On Big Carrier

Washington reports that Secretary of Defense Johnson ordered the navy to stop construction of the 65,000 ton United States aircraft carrier. The keel had been laid at Newport News, Va, and the weapon was designed to carry heavy bombers and atomic bombs. Officials cited doubts about lifting and landing future jet planes as speeds increase.

Credit Terms Extended To 24 Months

The Federal Reserve Board relaxed credit controls for installment purchases, extending terms to 24 months effective April 27, with down payments reduced to 10 percent for most items and 3 1/4 percent for autos. Exemptions apply to goods under $50, and prewar terms guided the new limits, aiming to ease inflationary pressure and extend control powers beyond June 30.

Alliance Man Dies After Route 619 Crash in Alliance

Stark County toll rises to 14 with the death of Fred Day Burris a 66 year old Alliance resident from 155 Ricest Alliance. He died at 8 15 a m in Alliance City Hospital after a week old accident on Route 619 near Bolton. Debuties report Burris traveling east when his car hit a machine driven by Robert E Easter 54 of RD 1 Atwater on a curve. Easter said Burris was speeding and on the wrong side. Burris car went over a five foot embankment 135 feet from the crash. Burris leaves a wife two daughters a twin sister a brother and four grandchildren. Dover Driver Held in Death

Robert C. Croy 28 of Dover is held by Akron police on second degree manslaughter charges after a truck collision with a car driven by Carl Kindler 19 of 1001 McKinley Ave SW. Kindler died at the scene. Raymond 16, Kindler’s brother, is critically injured.

Canton School Board Rebuffs Property Sale Decision

The Canton board of education met informally at Canton Club with all members present and rejected an offer to purchase the old Liberty School site. They expect the land may become a future city park or playground and rescinded a prior plan to sell two lots opposite Allen School. Principal Richard Dowding noted student use of a backstop on the lot. The board also approved advertising for bids to paint several school buildings.
