Winter Mildness Hardens Ohio Plowing Conditions

The mild winter left soil unusually compact, forcing farmers across Ohio to rely more on horse and tractor power for spring plowing. Wheat survived well with little snow cover, while fruit frost damage was limited though southern buds faced some kill. Early April cool weather slowed buds, aiding pea planting for canning and prompting strong early growth of tomatoes and transplanted cabbage in truck farming regions.
