Lake Lowell to Be a Summer Resort With Vast Dam Works

The Deen Flat reservoir project near Caldwell will create an artificial lake nine miles long and seven miles from Caldwell by next summer. Contractors Hubbard and Carlson started March 1, 1906, on a $300,000 dam project one and a third miles long, 200 feet wide at the base, tapering to 20 feet atop. The work will yield 750,000 cubic yards of dirt and 250,000 yards of gravel, with extensive equipment including a 60-ton steam shovel and 14-car donkey engine trains. About 3,000 yards of gravel are moved daily. 50 teams handle dirt with an elevated loader and 16-horse power train. After placement, dirt is soaked and rolled for compaction, with blasting anticipated to finish the dirt work soon. Cement outlets and headgates are installed by Shaffer Hawk & Clark of Boise, three reinforced concrete conduits 160 feet long on the dam’s west side.
