Washington reports final action on a 2.7 billion war tax bill that taxes birth to death, targeting excess war profits and broad consumer items. The plan doubles income tax rates, extends surtaxes, and imposes new levies on goods including cosmetics, stamps, motion pictures, chewing gum, and alcohol.
Fargo North Dakota October 4 7 Exempted or discharged registrants cannot enlist voluntary in the United States Army according to instructions received this afternoon at the Fargo substation from the secretary of war Previous orders allowed such men but the new directive allows modification after quotas are filled An exempted or discharged man may have his exemption questioned if an application for exemption is renewed at the local board At the request of the chief of engineers further instructions follow
Van Hook North Dakota October 4 A little daughter of Mr and Mrs Louis Johnson farmers was terribly burned about the face and hands when burning oil from an exploding kerosene stove was flung over her Her sister rushed to help and her clothing caught fire The mother and babe in arms were blistered and the girls faces and bodies badly scorched requiring skin grafts to prolong their lives
Coroner N O Holberg examined a body found under a bridge on the northern county road. The man bore seven bullet holes and wore only a small mirror and a box of matches. Burial is planned.
Representatives of National Union Fire Insurance Co of Pittsburgh, with over 2 million dollars in drouth coverage in North Dakota, discussed adjusting Flicker leases with Insurance Commissioner A. S. Olaness. They say agents wrote risks through July as crops failed, leading to thousands in invalid claims and disputes over paying for perished crops. they deny repudiating policies and blame neglect at the western headquarters in Minnesota.
Drouth insurance, new in North Dakota, has drawn many policies to crops up to seven dollars an acre, covering rust and hall. Farmers welcome protection while insurers question fairness after losses mount. Bankers Insurance Co of Montana led with over two million eight hundred fifty thousand in coverage and premiums. State department urged to avoid interference until action grounds appear.
Mike Johner of Regent reports seven head of cattle died after eating green flax. Across Hettinger county in the past month not fewer than fifty cattle have perished for the same reason, with similar plagues in Bowman, Blope and Adams counties.

Bramarck North Carolina October 4 an 18 year old Indian bride Mrs Sarah Jordan despondent over her husband leaving for Camp Greene Charlotte took poison at a local hospital and died later at eight hospital
Velva October 4 George Johnson a prominent farmer four miles south of Bergen was killed Sunday about 11 am while hunting with two brothers in law Melvin Frank and Hjalmer Hanson on the Henry Hegen farm. The gun went off accidentally while Jobo gon rode on the running board leaving a loaded weapon in reach. Johnson died within minutes. Coroner said no inquest needed. He was thirty, survived by wife and two children. Body shipped to Iowa.

British and Canadian aliens registered in Grand Forks North Dakota on October 4. The group includes Offy Canadians and British subjects who came to the United States to avoid military service. Registration details mention grounds for exemption and Dominion government involvement.
Police hold a parcel post driver on murder charges as regional drafts expand. Canadian recruiting officials, in Grand Forks, plan to mobilize machinery within two weeks, with most calls for men aged 20 to 34. Several England natives have enlisted. a depot may be set up locally. Ed White, convicted of manslaughter in the D C Stewart case, receives a six year penitentiary sentence. Washington October 4 spokesmen for organized farmers urged President Wilson to apply the army draft more liberally to farm labor to keep skilled farmers at work. The delegation led by a federal board of farm organizations commissioner argued relief and exemption for farm posts.
Belfield North Carolina October 4 Fire destroyed the Farmers elevator here last night with over 2000 bushels of wheat a carload of flax and a carload of flour valued about 25000 including the loss of the elevator The Dickinson fire department arrived and helped shuttle the flames for a time threatening the machinery house The run to the place was made in twenty one minutes It is believed part of the grain may be salvaged though its value is doubtful
Williston North Dakota October 4 Judge Frank B Fisker annulled the marriage of Joseph Burnham 32 a private in Company B First Regiment North Dakota National Guard and Arvilla Randall 14 after the girl’s mother challenged the union alleging lack of legal age. The couple wed August 28 at Schafer North Dakota during a picnic trip and the groom fled affidavit claiming he believed the bride to be of legal age.
In Minot North Dakota on October 4, 1924 B C Crowell 21 confessed to shooting Sam Dazell 28 driver for J B Reed Transfer at the Reed bar after a street argument. Dazell died en route to hospital despite Crowell's claim of accidental shots and a first degree murder charge was filed.
