Farmers clash with elevator workers over dockage amid weed seed and wild oats contamination. Droughty June slowed wheat, letting hardy weeds mature with grain, pushing dockage disputes nationwide. Some farmers use granaries to clean seed, while others haul direct to elevators, facing higher costs and lower returns.
At Huff in Mandan, North Dakota, a farmer jumped from a moving train after boarding a stopped coach. He rolled several times but righted himself, then recovered a 60 cent cap blown from his head. Train crew delayed about twenty minutes amid heated language.

In Scranton North Dakota on October 2 a bride aged 68 and groom aged 65 united in marriage. Peter Winckler of Tripp South Dakota married Mrs Lewis Matt after a swift courtship. Rev Wm Givers performed the ceremony and the bride’s 35 year old son assisted as interpreter to secure the license. The couple planned to live in Tripp after the ceremony.
Martha Martwick aged 23 daughter of Drake residents attempted suicide in the Great Northern hotel by drinking acid following a love affair. She survived after hospital care and faces a possible charge of attempted death by own action. Barber Charles Trenethan, her former lover, was arrested as a witness after a note blamed him. The piece also notes a separate Kenmare Journal item about a hardware store break in and Jake Martinson's typhoid attack.
Major J S Murphy of Minot and T A Hovestad of St Paul will discuss farm topics at Burke County Fair. Plans emphasize large crowds, concerts by the Kenmare band, moving pictures, dances, and racing events with substantial purses across burke county exhibits. The event features I A Hoyerstad and Major Murphy as speakers and promises strong agricultural displays and competitive premiums.
Five men were injured when a threshing machine owned by Geo Harcout exploded at Hardsfield North Dakota. The boiler lacked water due to failure to maintain level, water added to almost empty boilers. Injured: John Nelson George Tastman Jas Welsh Peter Weston James Elfridge. Engine wrecked and crew were transient threshers. A separate report claims a man was robbed near the Electric Mine by two Black men. police could not locate suspects.
New Rockford North Dakota October 1 Ira Packard Jr Soo agent at Sutton found two bullet holes through his cap when he confronted a masked robber who tried to rob him. Packard fired after the assailant shot his revolver failed after the first shot. The robber escaped.
Jonathan Southward of Glenwood Minnesota returns to Burke county to attend to farm holdings. He formerly lived here and became a leading farmer before moving to Glenwood to operate a lucrative summer resort on a lakeside tract. He still owns Burke county land and visits each fall to check on it.
E C Krueger departed Tuesday for Davenport Iowa to continue studies at the Palmer School of Chiropractic. He disposed of his Bowbells residence to Attorney Geo H Phelps, sold household goods, retains two business blocks and land near Bowbells, and plans not to return. Mrs Krueger and daughter Anna are also enrolling in chiropractic courses.
McClusky North Dakota October 2 Ed X Moore Gazette editor arrested on assault and battery warrant by Mrs Nettle Hargrave under influence of liquor. He entered her restaurant to “clean up” the place and was restrained by locals. He pled guilty and paid a total fine around $30.
John Kreuger pleads guilty to bootlegging after crossing the international line with liquor. Sentenced by Judge Kneeshaw to eight months in the state penitentiary after arrest three days earlier.
Four people were kicked by horses in Langdon North Dakota on October 2. Walter Keating suffered internal abdominal injuries and was near death at first. John Anderson had serious abdominal-like injuries. Mrs S I Konmsteid and Mrs Robbert Stevens on were kicked in the shoulder and arm but were not seriously hurt. Young Keating’s condition seemed grave earlier but improved. Also noted: Nils Seerakoov sold his 240 acre farm to G J Harms of Bowbells township and will move in during winter. Bert Smith residence north of town burned last weekend due to kerosene spill and fire. Dance every evening during the county fair.
In Marmarth North Dakota Oct one tragedy struck Vernon Ostrander farm when two young sisters aged 2 and 4 fell into a water barrel after climbing atop a sled and a box. Their father plowed nearby and mother returning from potato digging found them dead.
Louis Hellar, 83, reports his infant son severely injured when a horse owned by junk dealer Charles Ginsberg bit and trampled the child near 825 Fir Street South. The child was treated with chloroform and may recover unless internal injuries appear. the horse was left in front of the Hellar home during a junk-buying trip.
A visitor from C I Johnson Mfg Co of St Paul visited Saturday to place a 226 dollar order for type and materials to be shipped immediately. The Tribune plans replacing wood type cases with metal ones early next month to save space as demand for high grade work grows in Burke County and surroundings. Tribune requests readers to try a want ad.
