Burke county men drafted for Camp Dodge to depart for France
Fifteen Burke county men were chosen last Tuesday for Camp Dodge training then to France to aid the warriors. They reported to the local board Monday and were entertained by citizens with a theater show a grand ball and a patriotic talk by Rev Job Moore. The group marched to the depot before train No 106. Next group departs May 11 for Fort Logan. Pat Devaney a former Clayton township farmer and Minot police officer was shot fatally by bandits near Minot on Friday night. Officer Kelsey Gowin was also wounded as suspects tied to tire robberies were arrested and the inquest returned a verdict of murder against A L Buck and C N Ticknor. Washington April 23 A vehement attack on President Wilson and several of his officials by Senator Sherman marked the last day of unlimited debate in the senate on the Averman bill. Sherman blasted Secretary Baker and Secretary Wilson, and Postmaster General Burleson and George Creel for public information. Democrats Runadel and McKellar urged passing the bill to give the president authority to reorganize agencies for the war effort while cutting red tape. A highwayman attacked Mias Brigh Leering a local teacher near the high bridge east of Burlington on Saturday evening at six o clock demanding her money which totaled five or six dollars. He fled after she screamed and a search found a muffled coat in a nearby coulee. No arrest yet and residents vow to aid in the pursuit. Sanish Man Hanged for Selling Flak Flan? Noted Case
A Sanish man named Thomas P. Brennan was arrested in Mountrall county after a warrant sworn by County Commissioner Harry Hai on April 18 for selling seed tax he obtained from the county. Paroled Killer McPeek Leaves Penitentiary for New Job
M Mc Peek who four years ago was convicted in Mountrall county court of murdering his wife and sentenced to twenty years in the state penitentiary has been granted parole by the state board of pardons. He traveled from the State Institution at Bismarck to a western county to start work and was in Minot overnight. Attorney Mark M Chafield aided in securing the parole.
