Mrs Molzohn a 70 year old, was knocked down and hooked by an infuriated cow at her son Albert’s farm near Ross. She suffered a broken shoulder and will recover slowly due to age. A Stanley surgeon treated the fracture. the cow, usually gentle, attacked her as she entered the barn.
In Ross North Dakota a five year old girl, Louise Evie, daughter of Louis Evie the bank cashier, found a .25 calibre automatic pistol in the First State Bank and accidentally shot herself. The bullet perforated her stomach liver and lungs and she died within minutes. The tragedy cast a pall over Ross as mourners sympathized with the bereaved parents.
Dawson Press argues farmers can save by using a local cooperative flour mill. It shows a farmer using 1800 pounds of flour yearly could buy 45 bushels of 60 pound test wheat, yielding a net saving of about 42 dollars after costs. The piece urges every farmer to buy at least one share in the mill.
Minot North Dakota June 23 A Deering farmer William Charlson carried his three year old son Winfield on a load of brush when it overturned. The boy fell three feet striking his head, blood from the ears. Charlson rode on, the child clung to his leg, they fell. Brought to Minot hospital in a frail condition, the lad was said to be out of danger after a day or two.
Geo White and family travel from east of town in a large Cadillac to Glenwood Minnesota and Bancroft North Dakota to visit relatives for about three weeks. Mr White owns over a thousand acres of grain and wishes heavy rains would soak the Bowbells country so he must return by train and have his car shipped back.
The county auditor reports instructions from the adjutant general about handling lost registration certificates. Registration boards may verify registration and issue a written statement detailing name, date, card number, and loss evidence. Prefer this over duplicate certificates and publicize widely by email.
In Grant county district court Edmund Difba as guardian for Rudolph Dubs, a minor, received three thousand dollars damages for the loss of a leg and an arm on Northern Pacific Railway tracks.
A tramp plumber angered by mud balls at the new Mandan high school building hurled a heavy wrench striking 12 year old Millie Hedtke, rendering her unconscious and causing a brain concussion. Doctors warn the blow could have been fatal if struck higher. Rev. Hedtke says no effort will be made to locate the plumber who fled on an afternoon train.
Hillsboro North Dakota June 21 Captain Barney Boyd of Co L First North Dakota regiment was found not liable for libel after editor L Be George of the Hillsboro Banner published questions about funds raised for guardsmen at the Mexican border. Jury took four hours to decide the $5,000 damage claim.
The Bowbells electric light plant was sold to the Public Utilities Co of St. Paul which operates 13 plants in the state. A. E. Swanson returned from St. Paul with officers to close the deal. The new firm takes charge July 1 and will use local engines until a Kenmare pole line is built. Plans include a 24 hour service, line construction along the railroad and to farmers, and eventual connection to Kenmare for supplying power to Bowbells and nearby towns.
L D Perring received two carloads of Acme farm machinery and twine and is storing them near his feed mill after setting up the machines. The shipment includes binders mowers rakes wagons twine and parts with a full line of repairs available. Perring plans to push the business vigorously this year to meet many summer and fall prospects and expects strong sales.
A satirical poem depicts the Kaiser vowing to whip enemies and subdue nations with submarines while boasting Edison’s patent that could ruin his navy. It imagines divine backing and a mock call to war with Heaven if refused. The piece blends German persona with World War I era fears and technological pride.
Barton June 21 The body of Misa Sophia Nygaard twenty years old of Rugby North Dakota was recovered last night near the middle of String lake five miles east of Barton after a long search. She was in the lake bathing with others and remained in the water while companions left shore. Her death could not be explained by onlookers as she was a good swimmer and not in deep water. The girl’s parents live at Watford City North Dakota and she had been staying with Dr and Mrs Collison of Rugby as housekeeper.
Burke county old settlers held their annual picnic at Flaxton last Saturday drawing an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 people from Bow bells and towns like Ambrose Crosby Mohall and Sherwood. A big parade opened the day followed by speeches at the pavilion as attendees enjoyed ideal warm weather after years of rain.
Hon. Melvin Hildreth spoke briefly as the day featured sports and a Vand concert. Train 105 delivered the Warren and Minot league baseball teams, with Minot winning 7 to 4. Evening dances and moving pictures filled two packed halls while Seimeru band provided music. Large turnout exceeded expectations, many traveling up to a hundred miles for the ball game as the main attraction.
In spring typhoid cases in the city were linked to spring water. A random water analysis by Dr. Limburg at the state university found low bacteria counts and no intestinal colon organisms, deeming the water safe to drink.
A Sunday morning blaze destroyed the Commercial Club building in town along with its contents. The Patterson millinery stock, county superintendent’s office, Tarbett quarters, and Patterson family home were all lost. Only limited items saved. firemen faced hose issues but contained the fire. Burke county loses extend to the First State Bank insured property. some records saved, others destroyed.
William Behrbaum 27 assistant cashier at First National Bank of New Salem surrendered to U S authorities in Fargo after a warrant charged embezzlement of about 6500 dollars. He was arraigned and released on 10000 dollars bail. Bank officials said the incident will not affect the bank.
Jamestown North Carolina June 21 Carl Hoglund of Medina was shot and probably fatally wounded yesterday while watching target practice with friends on Medina outskirts. A bullet from a 22 calibre rifle glanced from the target entering his abdomen He was brought to Parkview hospital here but slight hopes are held for his recovery.
Minot North Dakota June 21 James McLaren lies in Ward County Jail awaiting trial for bootlegging. He says he has spent seventeen of his forty one years behind bars in various countries. He appears content, eats well, naps after meals, and attends Sunday services. He claims a record of petty thefts and other misdeeds and shows little interest in honest work.
In Dickinson North Dakota on June 21 Helen Dahike aged six was killed when an automobile driven by her father Richard Dahike turned over while attempting to pass another car. The father and a child in the rear seat of the vehicle were injured.
Postmasters across the state receive orders restricting liquor advertising in mail parcels. By May 1 1918 twenty four states will bar newspapers magazines and other publications containing liquor advertising from distribution.
