Mutilated body found in Mouse River near Minot

An unknown man about 40 years old with a cut throat and several knife wounds was found in the Mouse River by berry picker Mrs. Anna York. He weighed 180 pounds, sandy complexion, believed to have died within 24 hours. A handkerchief gagged the wound, and authorities suspect self-inflicted death. Police also report on Kansas City native Joe Allen known as Yorkie Allen, arrested for car break in Chicago and Alton for watermelons theft. Emma Skinner returns from Malta Montana with praise of crops and marks for land. she will teach a country school near Williston. The Bowbells Implement Co. introduces the first gas tractor, Pioneer, for cutting grain, replacing a slow Big Four tractor.

City School Opens Next Tuesday With New Teachers

The fall and winter term begins Tuesday as Monday is a holiday. Principal Emma Inglalla leads a strong staff including four new teachers replacing resignations. J H Clemons returns as superintendent with capable assistants. Bowbells district schools will be led by Miss Coons Kis School 2 Ida Heinin School 3 and Miss Loretta O Leary School 4 Sedoa 4. A sanitary drinking fountain, ordered earlier, is expected soon. A shorthand and typewriter department will be added after term starts, once a suitable teacher is found. The term is hoped to set attendance and event records.

Ducks Reach Record Numbers Ahead of Hunting Season

As the hunting season nears, ducks and chickens become more numerous. Lakes, sloughs, and pot holes teem with adults, making it easy for locals to harvest legal limits on opening day. The slough south of town is flooded, while DesLacs Lake east of Bowbells holds high rushes and wild rice, creating ideal duck habitat and hunting prospects.

One is Shot Dead in a Card Game

Mandan North Dakota August 26 Guy Bolton a Bismarck resident known in the capital city was shot dead after a card game at Shields North Dakota Saturday night. Bolton had a shady past including blind pig cases and time served at Mott. Morton County officials including the sheriff coroner and states attorney traveled to Shields to investigate though details could not yet be learned.

Minot Bids Win School Building Contracts in North Dakota

Dinnie of Minot topped the normal school building bid with 88 571 for main building and gym. Bartleson, also from Minot, bid 89 400 for the same scope. Spriggs Bros. of Grand Forks bid 32 820 for plumbing and heating. Olson Voetteer Electric of St Paul bid 1 600 for electrical work. Charlie Frank, formerly of Minot, reports ongoing grading contracts and planned northern work after Bowbells wintering. Uncle Hugh McGillvray of Newport visits for fall supplies.

Old Style Navigation Ship Resting by DesLacs Lake

A hand built steamship now deserted near the Crosby coal mine on DesLacs Lake shows crude craftmanship and archives a once busy cargo route between Kenmare and the lake head. Once vital to farmers across Renville county, ships carried groceries clothing and tools west and grain back east until rail lines reduced demand and water levels fell. The vessel, possibly the oldest in the region, likely built about 70 years ago, sits wrecked and unlikely to be repaired or reused.

Sewer System to Be Installed in Bowbells City

City council approved immediate sewer construction with bids called this week. 2600 feet of 12 inch main to run from First National Bank to Stony Creek with six man holes and six catch basins. Y connections on Main and Railway planned every 25 to 26 feet. work to be completed by October 15.

Van Berkom Assault Case Dismissed

James Van Berkom of near Powers Lake was arrested on assault with intent to kill. A six hour preliminary hearing in Justice Kopriva's court resulted in dismissal for lack of evidence. The report clarifies no knife was produced and a wrench was not used. the whiffle tree was dropped after Jensen picked up a pipe wrench. State and defense attorneys were Sherman Stainhofer Fred Andrews F E Heckel H A Hanson. The case was hard fought and dismissed for no cause for action.

Bull Moose Papers Stolen on Train in North Dakota

The Bull Moose party documents belonging to state chairman Dorr H. Carroll were stolen from his suitcase while he slept aboard Great Northern No. 2 Sunday between Fargo and Minot. The theft, reported to the railroad, has detectives handling the case and includes correspondence and a list of statewide committeemen.

North Dakota Stands All Tests

North Dakota stands all tests, says merchant K P Nappen of Lankin Walsh county after an inspection of Canadian Northwest conditions. He notes high yields but cautions on remote homesteads, long hauls, expensive machinery, and market access. He cites many hoping for railroads to return to God’s Country as cargoes and land prospects attract buyers. Also reports Burke county July births and no deaths, local land deals, vacations, and a thriving Donovan Bros. furniture display in Bondbells.
