Minot North Dakota reports more than 100 I W W members jailed after street disturbances and a Friday night clash. City officials rush police reinforcements while martial law potential looms and calls for separate juries rise amid protests and jailhouse chaos.
Kensal North Dakota August 14 authorities report a grave case as three Rogers sons Hugh Roberts Chester Elfstrom and Dan Farrel are arrested for a statutory crime at the urging of Frank Stears whose daughters aged 14 and 16 are said to have been victims. The youths are underage and related to one of the girls. Neighbors call for full prosecution noting the girls lack mothers and blaming ignorance of life facts for the tragedy.
Maddock North Dakota August 14 Joseph Kirkeby youngest son of Mr and Mrs Olaus Kirkeby was killed while hauling hay. A neck yoke ring broke causing the load to shift and the team to the foot of a hill. While stopping to unhitch in view of his parents he was kicked in the abdomen and died almost instantly. He was well liked and notable for his physique for his age.
Beguin, former police chief and threshing rig owner, and P J Tr eakey, Opera Pool Parlors proprietor, were arrested in Bowbells under the new gambling law taking effect July 1. Both were granted changes of venue and continuances, with bail posted. The law allows closing the gambling building for one year if convicted.
The Tribune notes the county fair will run on October 7 and continues to promise a rip roaring event. Details like the premium list and program will be published as announced, while a humorously mocked automobile description appears in the exchange.
Minot North Dakota August 14 editor J M Near of the Iconoclast socialist weekly says he was fired rather than resigning after a Socialist meeting at state headquarters. Near claims he remains a Socialist but will seek other ways to advance workers interests.
The text notes estimated average annual wages for five occupations: Carpenters 800 dollars Coal miners 600 dollars Factory workers 550 dollars Common laborers 513 dollars and Teachers 485 dollars. It argues higher pay for teachers will attract talent and improve school training.
The Burke county fair will be held at Bow Shells on Tuesday through Thursday, Oct 7–9, with over $800 already subscribed to pay purses and premiums. President F F Carter presides. committees for premium list, finance, amusement, printing, and grounds are named. H L Lyon to replace M H Powers as secretary as organizers plan a strong display of stock, crops, and exhibits.
