A Galician woman employed as a servant in Burt Humphrey’s home near Pembina North Dakota was burned to death when a can of gasoline exploded while she lit a fire. Her clothing caught fire and she fled the house across the fields before succumbing to burns a few hours later.

Mrs August Grumpto, mother of Mrs Peter McLellan, died at her Forsyth home on Friday. The deceased had long lived west of Bowbelle and left many friends in the area who learn of her passing with regret.
Two boys Joseph Langer Jr and Orville Myrback were hunting gophers near Bisbee North Dakota when a cartridge jammed in Myrback's rifle. In trying to clear it the weapon discharged and the bullet struck Langer in the hip at the lower joint. Both boys report the incident as accidental and no one else was harmed.
Adella Hogan, widow of Robert Hogan, awarded 1600 dollars in a North Dakota district court against John Bragg after a prairie fire on the Bragg farm killed Allen Thompson and burned Hugh Armstrong. The trial supported Bragg's direct responsibility, while the supreme court clarified that North Dakota law cannot blanketly hold farm owners liable for tenants who start fires.
Weather office records reveal seven months totaling 10.36 inches in 1917, 3.87 inches below the four year average and 3.13 percent lower. May to July 1917 losses total 4.80 inches, with May 1.93 inches, June 1.76, and July 1.30. July 28 saw 103 degrees, the hottest since records began at this station.
Killdeer North Dakota August 9 The Dunn county efficiency committee asks the war department to exempt experienced farm hands from military duty in a petition from committee members T G Ahern H J McGowan and Alfred Nelson. They contend removal of skilled laborers would disrupt the county s food production and efficiency.
Miss Edna Hanson daughter of Mr and Mrs W J Hanson of northeast of Bowbells returned home Friday from Kenmare hospital where she underwent an appendicitis operation. She is progressing nicely on the road to recovery.
Fargo reports Maurice Lundberg aged 16, son of Mr and Mrs C N Lundberg of Wheatland, was killed Monday in a Wheatland County incident. The tragedy reduces a local family and grieves the Wheatland community.
Theodore D. Fischer 26, of Portal International, drowned while swimming with Leo Baldwin and others at Short Creek near Portal on Friday evening July 27. Rescue attempts failed. Fischer was pronounced dead after CPR and physician efforts. Born June 9 1891 on a Minnesota farm, he moved to Portal in 1913 and worked at the Portal State Bank. Fischer was beloved as a friendly, capable businessman known as Bud, with close ties to Leo Baldwin and colleagues. his body was taken to Danube, Minnesota for burial.
A boy was killed when a neck yoke strap broke, dropping the rake tongue and overturning the implement while he raked east of Wheatland. He died ten minutes later. Short services were held at Wheatland with funeral to Pillager, Minnesota. Maurice Lundberg, a top student, was well liked. survive by parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
In Bowman North Carolina on August 9 E C Morris an insurance adjuster known for unflattering remarks about Uncle Sam and the draft was seized by locals in Rhama. He stood on a dry goods box before a crowd and apologized for his remarks then burned the flag he had slandered. Sheriff Norem has notified the U S district and will pursue further action.
Martin Pearson, who taught abball during recent terms in Stampede and Columbia territory and vacationed at Pelican Rapids, Minn., came home by auto last Saturday with friend Christ Hergeson who will spend the fall in the Lar Hon country. Pearson says he does not intend to teach this coming winter.
Washington reports a Post Office Department ruling narrowing military exemptions for postal employes. Carriers and many clerks below specified pay grades face stricter criteria, with emphasis on indispensability. Provost Marshal General Crowder orders reduced exemptions for dependents. local boards to weigh whether dependents can live on $90 monthly soldier pay. C J Winter suffers an infected thumb but plans to return to barber work after service.
Mark McArdle has purchased the Northgate Meat Market from C. J. Winter and opened it on Wednesday. J. J. Bedford will run the shop with two full lines of meat maintained. Old customers can expect the best service from Mr Bodford and fresh meat often.
Alvis Frame, four years old, daughter of Mr and Mrs F G Frame near Granville North Dakota, died from injuries after a horse kicked her while she played in the yard. A dog chased horses and the animal kicked at the dog, striking the child as the horses moved past the barn.
China Kundert a 24 year old machinist with Lahr Motor Sales Co. drowned after getting into trouble while learning to swim at Apple Creek four miles east of Bismarck. Ernest Happel dived to save him but Kundert sank and later died en route to hospital. Kundert was a longtime capital city machinist and valued worker.
Granville North Dakota August 9 B C Covell a prominent farmer five miles northeast of Granville was fatally injured by a bull Sunday afternoon He tried to escape over a woven wire fence but was pinned against a post suffering internal injuries and died soon after The bull owned by Covell and another farmer had not been vicious before and had only recently been turned into the pasture The Tribune supplied this report
In Cayuga North Dakota, Frank Marquette backed an automobile onto a baby carriage, crushing the child as he hurried from a machine. The car moved into a yard and the infant, pushed to the rear by the other children, was found under the vehicle when Marquette returned and started the engine. The child died immediately.
Tom Odden, a well known Plumer country farmer and brother of Register of Deed J O Odden, was impaled by a pitchfork handle after the fork rode down from a hay wagon. The handle entered his body eight to ten inches as he jumped to the ground near his home. He was rushed to Abe Crosby hospital in critical condition.
New England New England high school janitor Anton Nilifjohn, an Austrian about 50, was found hanging from piping in the boiler room of the school building. He leaves a widow. Police believe the recent enlistment of his eldest son in Company D may have affected his mind.
Kenmare Journal reports that Pulver was arrested last week on a charge of issuing a check on Farmers and Merchants Bank in the city without funds. She appeared before County Justice Griffith, waived examination, and was bound over to the next term of county court with bonds set at $200.
Mrs. Nellie Norrie sues C O Adama and Jesse Mott in Ward County District Court seeking to stop draining the Des Lacs lake. Plaintiffs argue lowering the outlet would convert the meandered lake into hay meadow covering 1000 to 1600 acres, harming wildfowl and game value. Defendants and other riparian owners seek private drainage rights to create hayland. The case disputes public water rights versus private alteration.
