Washington reports the draft master lists reach local exemption boards and a second draft may be planned for ages 18 to 40. General Crowder notes failure to appear will trigger military pursuit and court martial. Canada trip mentioned in context of wartime mobilization.
Police arrested Frank Cashen and W Cunningham for allegedly taking three boxes of dynamite from G A Bodmer's power house. They waived examination, pled guilty, and were bound over to district court. Sam Skeen, with Company A in Minot, faces charges of complicity and may be arrested there.
Ten silver gray and black foxes arrived in St. Johns North Dakota from the Athabasca river, 200 miles north of Edmonton, in custody of M D Chase to stock the new Fox Farm. Quarters were prepared and North Dakota begins a unique fur industry.
Two young men from Minot driving toward Montana stopped by a chicken coop near Ray. They shot a chicken with a pistol found in their car. A farm motorcycle rider appeared and the youths said their father would meet them in Ray for a meal, costing exactly 23 dollars 75 cents.
North Dakota officials aged 21 to 30 are not exempt from the draft due to office. Governor Frazier asked Marshal General Crowder if county offices may be filled by appointment for the unexpired term. East Grand Forks August 2 Walter Borawan a government clerk in the War Department offices at Washington believes citizens may be called to register for another draft before many months expire. He passed through East Grand Forks yesterday en route to Winnipeg.
The Bangor Wisconsin Independent notes that country newspapers cost 42 dollars yearly while similar items would rise to 8 dollars if prices rose with other goods. It argues such rate hikes are not worth it and that other commodities have increased 100 percent and more.
A three year old boy, son of Clifford Lasham, was struck by a mower near Gilby. The blade cut off both feet above the ankles as the father could not see through tall weeds. He remains at the farm for treatment after a serious loss of blood.
A stranger named John Green tried to end his life by headbutting the box car wall. Marshal K J Besteland and Constable McVeety found him bleeding and unresponsive, transported him to jail, and he was later treated by Dr Moffatt. Suspected of mental imbalance, he was to be sent to Minot for county custody.
Farmers began harvesting winter rye this week and all expect yields far higher than earlier estimates. Fields once viewed as ruined by June frost or drought were bought cheaply months ago, but current prospects indicate rye will produce the best yield among the season’s small grains.

N D August 2. Little Miss Marle OBrien, twelve, saved two year old Margaret Teschner from the Mouse river after the child wandered near the bank. The heroism occurred when the baby fell into the water during play near Fourth street N W.
Merle O'Brien, watching from the riverbank, saw the baby fall into the four foot water. She, though only learning to swim, plunged in and brought the infant to shore. Both survived as the child was revived in the minutes after the near drowning.
A car driven by M. Nelson with his wife and child and a woman with a baby plunged into the Mouse River at Wildwood Park opposite the bathing beach. The rear seat occupants, including Mrs Olson and her baby, escaped in time. the front seat occupants were swept into the river but rescued. The car struck a submerged stump, preventing further submersion.
Burke county publishers show clear luck in the draft registration. Only four publishers registered and three are drawn for the first call. Names drawn include J B Myers Columbus Reporter Carl V Torngren Ligu re American and B A Stefanowicz Bowbells Tribune. F C Hoyt Portal International registered but not drawn.
Fargo reports a carrier pigeon found exhausted near Brisban e North Dakota, suspected to be part of a German spy system. Local officials plan to intern the bird until after the war, based on bank cashier M N Hayden’s letter noting leg bands and a possible coded message.
Federal authorities arrest Kate Richards O’Hare, a long time chautauqua lecturer and editor, on charges of obstructing enlistment service after a Bowman's NC address. She pleads not guilty. bond set at 1000 dollars as officials plan parole review.
Hazelton North Dakota August 2 two serious accidents linked to hay tracks left Clyde Kurtz prominent Emmons County farmer badly injured by a fall from a barn hay track and J H Sweitzer of Hague suffered a 87 foot fall after trolley wheels spread both men injured with possible internal trauma and multiple fractures.
Minot North Dakota August reports farmer Line Baugh owner of a large Berthold area farm foresees a fair wheat yield if Friday and Saturday winds do not hurt crops. He has 200 acres of wheat and notes good results from crop rotation and prior safe years including twelve bushels per acre in 1911 during a near failure.

Fischer aged about 26 drowned in Short creek thirteen miles west of Portal N D He and four friends visited the stream for a swim in a treacherous section He sank and Leo Baldwin nearly lost his life while attempting a rescue The body was recovered and taken to Danube Minnesota for burial He had worked at the Portal State Bank for several years.
Mrs. Welland Seger visiting her father B A Enochaon with baby and sister Elia had a Ford accident near the Coulee West of the school house. The engine stalled the hill, emergency brakes failed, the car overturned off an embankment pinning occupants briefly. They escaped with no serious injuries and returned to Columbus the same day.
Bowman North Carolina August 2 Phillip Smith shot himself after his wife refused to reconcile. He had brought her from Elizabethtown NC and left a farewell note in her apron pocket. Smith earlier faced forgery conviction and imprisonment, then remarried his former wife who later left for teaching study.
Mandan North Dakota August 2 A cupful of birdshot was removed from Nick Bergers right leg after a dog wag brought the party from Center while they hunted jack rabbits. A friend accidentally fired during a gunning outing.
