Fescenden North Dakota August 3 A lightning strike set Kunkel’s barn ablaze destroying seven horses and eight others, along with harnesses feed and equipment. The racing stallion William Rose valued at three thousand dollars perished. Two severely burned survivors were killed to end their suffering.
Eight inmates escaped the state penitentiary near Bismarck around 11 this morning. Three have been captured. guards were redeployed during a Saturday clean-up as prisoners breached the east wall with crowbars and chisels, aided from outside. Escapee James Gleason, noted for a pool hall killing in Coulee last fall, is among those missing.
New Rockford North Dakota August 8 It was necessary by the surgeon in charge to amputate the fourth finger of George Yorks right hand He was burned when he touched a live wire three weeks ago while working in the basement of Agent Prnes house A fellow worker rescued him by switching off the current Skin grafting will hasten healing for larger burns He will be unable to work at his trade for weeks
In Taylor North Dakota Charles Roger Dickinson aged three days or more? died at home after a sunstroke event and nervous prostration. Excessive heat and prior stroke contributed to his death. Survived by wife two children father brother and sister.
Beobay citizen Rolla Bleley, a young man well known locally, was fatally injured at White tall Wednesday when the horse he was riding caused a deadly accident in the vicinity.
In a bucking contest Bigley tangled in a wire fence and fell on his horse. The horse charged toward a pasture as others tried to intervene. Bigley suffered a crushed chest and internal injuries. He died at seven last evening after being brought to Outlook for surgery.
Dickinson report says John Cherchenko and two children suffered burns when an alcohol lamp exploded on a Fayette area homestead. Fathers self sacrifice helped extinguish flames on the children before tending his own injuries. all will recover in hospital.
President Townley of the non partisan leagues addresses state fundraising for a sinking fund to protect the league. He estimates needs from 300000 to 500000 dollars while Bottineau farmers subscribe about 2500 dollars toward the effort.
A Sisters Home is being built at the rear of St. Agnes School by Elliott and Glark with a 30 by 50 foot three story structure and full basement. The project costs about 10000 dollars and should be finished by September 1. It will house Ursuline Sisters coming from other states and serve as a training site for new entrants and visiting staff.
Farmer L C Rytter lost several valuable horses after a pail of oats treated with gopher poison was overturned by the animals. Six horses ate the oats, three died quickly and three more succumbed shortly after. Three spring pigs also perished from the poison exposure, leading to an estimated loss near 1400 dollars to the neighborhood.
The Woburn Concert Band and the Yeo man lodge plan a Saturday evening dance at Woburn Hall next week. The 16 piece band will provide music and supper will be served. Woburn dances are reputed to be the best in Burke county and attendees usually enjoy top satisfaction.
Mandan North Dakota Aug 8 Jack Ryan 32 sought shade from the hot sun by lying under a boxcar but fell asleep as a switch engine moved the car over his leg severing it just below the knee in a grim mishap.
Paul Johnson twenty year old son of Mr and Mrs Emery Johnson was injured while repairing augers in a well sixty feet deep when a drilling rod detached and struck him on the head. Rescue by Thomas Morgan and others brought him to the surface and to the hospital where doctors treated a serious skull fracture with brain exposure.

Williston North Dakota August 3 James Wheeler sentenced for blind pig lar robbed man ends life in local jail by slashing his throat with a razor. Wheeler had obtained the razor on plea of shaving himself and was a former resident of Ray for some time.
A well on Mrs. Fred Baethke's farm, three miles west of the city, reached 273 feet with a 6 inch pipe to the bottom. Water shoots several feet high and pours through a two inch pipe about fifteen feet. The water is drinkable and adequate to irrigate the three quarter section farm. Otto A. Olson conducted the work.
After about thirty six hours of deliberation the jury found John Mueller guilty of murder in the second degree and fixed the penalty at thirty years. Mueller remains in the county jail awaiting sentence. Cadieux foreman and Mallick clerk were selected after the jury withdrew.
Ten jurors found guilty while two believed insanity, ballots repeated through the night. After 10 o'clock the two holdouts shifted to guilty. A long discussion followed on imprisonment, yielding a 30 year sentence at the state penitentiary. North Dakota fish hatchery distributes record stocking effort and reports excellent hunting prospects.
Pembina North Dakota August 3 Steve Howit an Army deserter from the Mexican border was drowned in the Red River while trying to flee. Howit was arrested at Emerson Minnesota and turned over to St. Vincent officials after confessing desertion. He disappeared from the sheriff's residence during supper and his body was recovered yesterday in the river.
Deyile Lake North Dakota August 3 The casket holding the remains of Ed J Richards well known farmer was opened at the G A R cemetery after grave services to place the newborn baby that died at birth beside the father The mother remains in a precarious condition in hospital
In Ellendale North Dakota Aug 8 sheriff and officials used local powers to thwart an I W W mobilization with 80 to 100 members in the county. I W W agitators were ordered to depart and most left, while Jamestown remains the I W W destination with no disorder reported.
Ray North Dakota August 3 Dealo Peyton 12 son of Hugh Peyton had a close call when a wagon ran away tangling reins near the Dr Schram residence. The wagon dipped into a deep ditch throwing the boy beneath the wheels passing over his chest. He suffered bruises but escaped with no broken bones.
