Voters head to the polls amid a calm citywide voting day. The race for mayor dominates attention while other races and issues pass with little drama or disruption. Local civic groups urge turnout and noting the peaceful process.
The city voted for mayor amid a tame race with three candidates. Frank Smith, praised for his term as alderman, won by 14 votes. Other offices drew unopposed bids by Herman Endreson treasurer H C Blenkner city justice and C J Kopriva police magistrate. A full candidate vote tally follows.
Six miles east of Powers Lake a young farmer, Mike Poteske, advertised in an eastern paper for a wife after tiring of Aunt Jemima pancakes. He chose a northern contender and engaged, then tried home matchmaking. A comely local maiden soon appeared who preferred a western suitor and traveled to Bowbells forcing a clash of promises.
The man, who courts a 20 year old woman, gathers his courage and marries after obtaining a license. They leave Bowbells by train seeking a minister, while the country girl remains watching and waiting for her faithless lover.
F E Lyons returned Monday from a several days business trip to Williston and Havre Montana. He reports favorable moisture for rich crops in eastern Montana and predicts a great western future. Homesteaders are flocking in as land is broken and cultivated. Williston he calls the liveliest city along the line with much business activity. Also noted is Carrie Hansch visiting Columbus to arrange a tenant for her 125 acre farm near there for next season.
In Bismarck on April 5 the Burleigh county district court opens May 16 for the trial of former state treasurer G L Bickford on embezzlement charges. A venue change is possible due to local prejudice. Bickford, home in Bowbells, faces amended charges of misappropriation. Attorney D C Greenleaf will attend in Bismarck for the Cowan case as a witness.
Elmer Eaton returned from Tolley after hearing Prof W H Campbell speak on dry farming to a large crowd of farmers. The lecturer’s advice was well received and likely to be adopted by many in the area. Campbell’s dates are booked until June with open dates before June. he charges either 100 dollars or 100 subscriptions to his farm paper. Eaton suggested Bowbells invite him to lecture before the race meet to boost attendance and interest among farmers.
A local note suggests Bowbells residents can secure subscriptions for a newspaper at no cost by asking farmers at the races. The writer urges the community to gather and discuss the matter.
Miss Abbie Hennessey visited Minot on the prior Sunday while Sheriff Stainhofer conducted official business there. Hattie Park returned from Minnesota Lake to her Bowbells farm, planning spring and summer work. R B Cox traveled from Hot Springs, Arkansas after rheumatism treatment, reporting improved health and renewed mobility, with a recent ride through Oklahoma and Texas revealing recent Bowbells snow.
The Valley Farm play by Bowbells home talent at Lyons Opera House Friday benefited the High School Library Fund. The crowd filled the venue, laughs rang through the show, and proceeds near 160 dollars will buy library books for Bowbells High School. Mrs. C E Pierson led rehearsals and production with unpaid effort. the Lyons, Donovan Bros, and local orchestra supplied space and time.
