Ohio temperance instruction act amended 1900
Ohio General Assembly enacts amendments to prior temperance education law. It requires schools and state supported institutions to include instruction on the effects of alcoholic drinks and narcotics with standardized promotion tests, sets teacher training duties, and imposes fines for noncompliance. The measure repeals the earlier 1888 act and takes effect after passage in 1900.

Widow Maynard towed through fortune and social life
The late Joshua Maynard left most of his substantial estate to his widow. She settled charities and education before year’s end, then traveled abroad, returning to New York to host friends. A war correspondent friend Baxter became her confidant and potential match, while she urged him to marry for money, sparking a realization that she loves him and that his heart lies with another woman. The dialogue reveals a shift from mutual convenience to genuine affection as love emerges between them.

Friction Between American French Troops in Tien-Tsin
Tien-Tsin Oct 24 A large Allied force camped in close quarters breeds friction amid national biases leading to several incidents. Most clashes occur at the French pontoon bridge where American guards and French sentries clash over boat passage. One altercation left a man overboard and others injured. An officer intervened and orders restored passage. A later incident involved a three boat convoy and bayonets drawn, with one Frenchman injured. The fighting stems from past fatality of Corporal Hughes and ongoing tensions among units in the lath Infantry and gd Artillery, with parallels drawn to patched hostilities between French and American troops.
