Hon Stacy Wells, Democratic candidate for Judge of the 10th Judicial District, spoke in the city yesterday, visiting friends and supporters. He splits time between Beaver Ridge and Alva, with family based in Alva during the cesas period. Wells is a Northwestern student and expects a strong, perhaps overwhelming, vote in November, reflecting district popularity and qualifications.
The long awaited rain came in abundance on Monday night with reports of three inches locally. Other parts of the county saw from an inch to three inches, enough to improve crop conditions and soak the wheat ground badly needing rain.

Memorial exercises near Sunset honor Floyd N. Girton killed in action in France July 25 1918. Attended by L L Girton and family, Rev J L Wella, Davis, Perkins, with Beaver County Band and local school groups. Girton born Magnolia Mississippi August 21 1895 moved to Beaver county 1904 and enlisted October 1917. Urges community sacrifice until peace. Also lists WWI entrainment notices for local registrants with serial numbers and destinations.
E L Fickel and family returned last week from Colorado camping at Green Mountain Falls with Misa May Overstreet who lived nearby. The note mentions a refreshed Overland car finish and a reader pledge to The Herald. W B Leonard visited relatives in Nebraska reporting prosperous harvests and abundant crops. Jeff Helland returned from Oklahoma City.
The man power bill increases the draft age from 18 to 21 and 31 thresholds, awaiting presidential signature. It requires all men aged 18 to 45 to register for military service. Registration day is September 12.
August 25 registrants are summoned this week for physical exams to be held Friday September 6 at 9 a.m reporting time.
The death of Moses Delbert Dowers, born September 24, 1917, occurred August 23, 1918. He was taken to Liberal Hospital two days after illness but died despite earthly help. He was a bright child mourned by his parents and siblings. Funeral services were led by Brother Dutt and he was laid to rest in Beth Samaritanary Cemetery at 10 o'clock.
The Herald announces a government rule banning free or credit subscriptions due to paper shortages. Subscriptions will move to strict pay in advance. notices will be sent to all subscribers, and nonrenewal will stop delivery. Prices may rise as production costs increase.
The Ladin sewing group schedules sessions on Tuesday August 20 and Friday August 23, listing members such as Mrs Nettie Han, Mary Stafford, Lily Coleman, Ada Dunlap, and Mrs John Kaly. Garments finished include beds, pajamas, sweaters and socks. the note announces all work on hand and readiness for a new quote.
